Croatia (HZ) E-mail

Country info: Croatia (Hrvatska)

Rail companies: HZ (Hrvatske željeznice)

Croatian Rail Network Map

Currency: 1 euro= app. 7.5 Croatian Kuna (HRK)

Train travel in Croatia: train types, tickets, fares, discounts & other useful info

National Train Service:

Train types in Croatia: Passenger (Putnički), Fast (Brzi); Express (Ekspresni); Intercity (InterCity & InterCity Nagibni) & international EuroCity/EuroNight trains

  • Passenger (marked as 'P' on HZ website) – local rail service all over Croatia, no seat reservation required (basic domestic tariff applies)
  • Fast train (marked as 'B' on HZ website) - long-distance national & international service, no seat reservation required (special 7 HRK supplement to basic tariff applies)
  • Express (marked as 'E' on HZ website) - long-distance domestic service, no seat reservation required (special 13 HRK supplement to basic tariff applies)
  • Hz_putnicki_train
  • InterCity (marked as 'IC' & 'ICN' on HZ website) – intercity service connecting major Croatian cities & towns (currently from Zagreb to Split (ICN), Koprivnica, Osijek, Rijeka, Čakovec, Vinkovci), seat reservation can be made, but not required, except for ICN trains Zagreb-Split-Zagreb where seat reservation is compulsory (special 18 HRK supplement to basic tariff applies)
  • EuroCity/Euronight (marked 'EC' & 'EN' on HZ website) – international trains, seat reservation can be made, but not required (unless for couchette/sleeper)

Validity of Trains Tickets in Croatia: domestic one way tickets for journeys <100 km are valid for 1 day, for journeys between 101-400 km - 2 days & 4 days for journeys >400 km. Return tickets are valid either during 1 day (for journeys <50 km), 2 days (journeys >51 & <100 km) or 6 days (journeys >100km)

Discounts, special offers & ways to save money for passengers traveling in Serbia (ZS):

  1. Passengers purchasing return tickets (journeys >25 km) in Croatia receive 20% discount
  2. Passengers holding ISIC or EURO-26 cards receive 25% discount for domestic one way or return tickets
  3. Another simple & easy way to save on rail travel in Croatia is to avoid expensive ICN and IC trains (at least when it is possible), in such regard passengers will be able to save on IC/ICN tariff supplement
  4. Passengers planning to visit more than one destination in Croatia (for instance during a day trip) can take advantage of the fact that Croatian Railways allow one stopover for any domestic journey done with one way ticket or two stopovers with any return ticket (one stopover during outward & one during return trip). What that means is that passenger having ticket from destination A to destination B can travel from A to C with stopover in destination B, thus instead of two separate tickets purchase one through ticket and as result save some money due to regressive nature of HZ domestic tariff

International Train Service:

c) CityStars

It is possible to purchase Rail Plus Card in Croatia (allows 25% discount on any international tickets between almost all European countries).
