Hi,

We are looking for the best and cheapest way to travel from Salzburg Banhof (main train station) to Vienna International Airport.
Our flight takes off at 22:30h from VIE. So will need to be there by 20:00 latest.

Checking the OBB site shows one connection to be:
1. Salzburg Hbf (14:08) to Wien Westbanhof (16:30)
2. walk 166m to Wien Westbanhof U3 (is this easy to navigate?)
3. Wien Westbanhof U3 (16:38) to Erdberg U3 (16:52)
4. Erdberg U3 (16:52) to Erdberg VIB Platform 3 (17:00) (what does this mean? we walk from U3 platform to VIB platform 3?)
5. walk from Erdberg VIB to Flughafen Wien Bus Terminal, 59m. (will be be easy signposting for commuters to follow? what to watch out for here?)
6. Take Bus 6000 to reach VIE in 15 mins time. (how far will the bus terminal be from the International departure hall?)

Would really appreciate advice on how best to do it.

Thanks!

What's the date? Since it's a bit weird to start as early as 14:08 when your flight is at 22:30. Line Salzburg-Vienna has very frequent traffic (OeBB Austrian State Railways and WestBahn private company), so you should easily be able to start in between 16-17 and be in Vienna on time

2. walk 166m to Wien Westbanhof U3 (is this easy to navigate?)

To be honest, it is way too complicated. Route planners time to time tend to propose such multiple change journeys in order to save like 5 or 10 minutes in total travel time. We find it not worth the hassle, especially for people not well acquainted with Vienna city transport system, much easier will be just to catch train from Salzburg to Wien Westbahnhof and then take direct airport bus from there (bus stop is just in front of the train station), which will take you to airport bus station (located in front of arrivals hall, but it's very easy to get form there to departure) E.g. depart from Salzburg 16:08, arr. to Wien West 18:30 and catch 18:40 bus to the airport (arr. 19:25)

Also remember that in case you departure date is not in the next few days, in advance train ticket purchase can actually save you quite a lot of money on OeBB tickets. Or alternatively, you can just use WestBahn and pay only 24,9 euro (compared to 50+ euro for OeBB full fare standard ticket)

Thanks All for the reply.
Our travel date is 12 June 2015.
Guess the better option is to take to Westbanhof and take the bus from there to airport.
Would take suggestion to leave Salzburg 16:08.

Unfortunately for dep. 16:08 on June 12 all the discounted 19 euro tickets are already sold out, promo fare tickets are left only for 17:08 departure (arr. to Vienna 19:30) -->

But if you want to be on a safe side and arrive to the airport earlier than 20:25 (will happen if you take 17:08 train), then perhaps you can just take WestBahn train departing Salzburg 15:52 (arr. to Vienna 18:22), this way you will make it to the same airport bus (dep. 18:40 - arr. to the airport 19:25)

If 17:08 train from Salzburg Hbf will
How do we book the 17:08 ticket for 2 to travel?
I can't find it on my OBB portal when I key in the Salzburg Hbf to Wien route.
It only shows the 38.8 Eur tickets.

Just open Austrian Railways (OeBB) ticket sale page, enter stations + date and tickets should be shown. Now checked again, for 17:08 departure on 12 June those 19 euro (per person, thus it will make 38 euro in case two passengers traveling) tickets are still available, but obviously they can get sold out any time. Quota of discounted tickets are limited per each departure, so it's first come - first serve bases

Please note for everyone who want travel to the "Vienna" Airport some Trains end in Wien HBF when the are a little late and do NOT continue to the Vienna Airport.

Plan B is search for the Conductor and let the give you an Stamp and Mark that the Train is terminating in Wien HBF (or in the Ticket office but you risk to wait for 10 - 20min depend on the Time).
Rush to the Track 2 (Downstairs!) get any Train who are departing there to "Wien Rennweg" where every 30Min Local Trains to Vienna Airport depart.
