Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: stopover in Bratislava
« on: January 16, 2011, 02:13:09 pm »
Discounted SparSchiene tickets are not available for route Budapest-Vienna via Bratislava, but only for direct route Budapest-Vienna via Gyor.
If you want one through ticket, then it can be purchased, but we do not recommend to buy it like this, since it will be rather expensive because no discount will be applied.
The best and cheapest option just to buy two separate tickets - Budapest-Bratislava in Budapest and Bratislava-Vienna in Bratislava. For both legs there are permanent discounts available, so no need to purchase any tickets in advance, just buy your tickets before departure.

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: Diret Train Lvov - Riga
« on: January 14, 2011, 04:11:59 pm »
It is not running already for many years. It used to be an everyday train, but since the fall of USSR traffic obviously declined, then the train was substituted for a carriage Riga-Truskavets via Lviv, but the carriage stopped running like four or even five years ago, so at the moment there are no direct rail connection at all.
And even more, nowadays there are only 2 permanent international trains running from Riga, one to Moscow and one to Sankt-Petersburg (http://www.ldz.lv/?object_id=4422). So the timetable you found probably just some kind a leftover of model schedule left in 'Ekspress' system. It is there, but it is not used. Similar thing happens with many non running trains.

p.s. btw, there are almost every year a rumor that previously running Riga-Gomel train will be "reincarnated" (Riga-Truskavets carriage, as far we remember, used to run with it), but it always stayed a rumor, unfortunately.

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Train Oradea Wien
« on: January 11, 2011, 03:51:09 pm »
Another option is to exploit the 'group' count. Real discounts for regular tickets in this case start from 6 passengers, but there are CityStar available for MAV-OeBB. In your case part within OeBB will <100km, thus base fare 46.7 EUR for one passenger or, as in your case, 93.4 EUR for 3 passengers. You can purchase it from first the Hungarian station (for you already mentioned Biharkeresztes) after crossing of Romanian border.
So all 3 will be 93.4 EUR (+ small sum for Oradea-Biharkeresztes leg) vs. app. 55 EUR*3 in case of regular tickets. But the problem is that you might experience problem with purchasing such CityStar at small station like Biharkeresztes. Cashier there might not know about it or will need to call somewhere and ask etc., so you risk to stuck there.

Other CityStar option is to purchase CityStar Romania-Slovakia (there are not CityStar for Romania-Austria) till last Slovak station before Austrian border. Not sure about exact fare, but you might just ask in Romania: "How much is Citystar CFR-ZSSK for 3 passengers for route Oradea-Devinska Nova Ves/Bratislava-Petrzalka", it might be cheap enough to make sense. Bratislava-Wien return cost 11 euro.

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Train Oradea Wien

Cheapest option for you is to purchase two sets of tickets:
1) Oradea-Budapest return (full fare 29.6 euro, ticket valid for one month). There are discounted 21 euro return tickets, but those valid only for 4 days, thus not really suitable to your plans. No point to break ticket via border, since one way Biharkeresztes-Budapest cost 3890 HUF (app.14 euro).
2) If you will stay in Wien less than 4 days, then just purchase in Budapest so called tourist ticket (Kirándulójegy) Budapest-Wien return (valid 4 days), without Wien city transport it cost 25 euro, with 2 days of Wien city transport - 31 euro. On the way back just show both tickets (return part of your Oradea-Budapest and return of you Budapest-Wien) to the conductor.
If you plan to stay in Wien more than 4 days, then the best thing is to purchase discounted one way ticket Budapest-Wien for 13 euro and Wien-Budapest for 19 euro. First ticket your can buy either in Budapest at the ticket counter (at least 3 days before your travel) or online from MAV website (http://www.mav-start.hu/eticket/nemzetkozi_e_ticket.php , interface is in Hungarian). Wien-Budapest one way discounted can be bought from OeBB website - https://ticket.oebb.at/bin/frame_ticket.pl?ticket=jticket.pl&LANG=EN

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Europe trip dilemma
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:46:19 pm »
On this forum we are really rarely recommend to use any type of pass and your case is not an exception. We wouldn't recommend to use pass for your travels. Your second option would be much cheaper and actually not that difficult to accomplish:
For Paris-Stuttgart leg you can purchase discounted ticket. If you buy in advance, then tickets start from 29 euro (can be bough on either French railways website - tgv-europe.com or German railway website - http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?newrequest=yes&protocol=http:& , so just check which one offers better fare for your date).
Lander ticket is perfect solution for a group like yours, so your choice couldn't be better, but just as a small note - if you don't plan major railing on Day 4 you might not need Lander ticket, but City Pass for instance, just count whether it worth its value for your Day 4 plans.
No problem with luggage on Black Forest scenic ride, between Offenburg and Singen there are standard DB regional trains, so plenty of space there.
For your Swiss plans we kind of have doubts about involvement of Eurail again, especially since there are other cheaper options. For instance, SuperSaver tickets (https://www.sbb.ch/mct/wi/shop/b2c/adw.do?4004) for route Basel-Luzern cost from 12.4 CHF, for Luzern-Interlaken from 12 CHF, Interlaken-Zweisimmen from 11.6 CHF etc. The only negative thing is that officially last day of use of SuperSaver ticket is March 6th, but it might be prolonged. If not, then you can at least use SuperSaver tickets for the first part of your Swiss trip, afterward just purchase full fare ticket and it would still be cheaper than Eurail tour.
Basel-Paris tickets start from 20 euro on French railways website, but again you need to purchase those in advance.

Hm, one weird thing I ran on: last January ZSSK told me in an e-mail that Citystar to Russia is valid 2 months, but now, they said it's only one month. It wouldn't be weird if just that, but according to this (http://doc.rzd.ru...) ticket validity should be 2 months becouse Slovakiа signed that agreement.
Well, first of all it's worth to mention that SMPS (in quoted RZD doc - СМПС) it is just convention designed long time ago for so called 'Easter Bloc' and China/Mogolia (organization OSShD/OSJD - Organization for Cooperation of Railways), it is similar to CIV for 'Western Bloc' (organization UIC - International Union of Railways). Tariffs are something secondary to this agreements. TCV, which is now SCIC-NRT, is general tariff for interstate CIV members connection, SMPS doesn't have a unified interstate tariff like SCIC-NRT, but has couple specific tariffs designed for specific purposes - like MPT or interstate tariff between former USSR countries.
While East-West tariff originally designed to connect CIV countries with SMPS countries, thus regulations concerning only SMPS, the ones you quoted above, does not apply here. The confusion might arise since some countries like Slovakia or Czech Republic are members of both, but still ticket ZSSK/CD-RZD will be issued not with help of any tariff 'outgoing' from SMPS convention, but with a help of East-West (actual agreement can be found here - http://www.oebb.at/static/tarife/scic-ewt__besondere_internationale_befoerderungsbedingungen_ost_-_west_/index.html).
As you can see, here (6.1.1) it is specifically stated that: "Die übrigen internationalen Beförderungsausweise gelten einen Monat", but "Für gewisse Tarifangebote, bestimmte Verbindungen oder bestimmte Vertriebskanäle können die BBT eine unterschiedliche Geltungsdauer vorsehen". As result of this last point, in reality some tickets issued with a help of East-West tariff might have different validity than 1 month. For instance CityStar ZSSK-RZD previous years or example from my experience - last time I traveled using East-West tariff ticket Budapest-Chop was valid for 2 month, but ticket Zahony-Chop for same MAV-UZ connection - only 4 days.

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Cheep teckets for senior in Poland /link
« on: January 06, 2011, 10:04:41 am »
Here is the link for all the discounts for trains of PKP InterCity company (TLK, EIC, Ex trains) - https://bilet.intercity.pl/irez/jsp/pokazTabelaZnizek.jsp?info=1&checkJS=true As far as we see, there are special 50% discount for seniors (>60), but you need to have special card (Legitymacja Seniora), which you need to purchase for 75 PLN, valid for one year.
Full list of all the special offers/discounted tickets for domestic connections can be found here - http://www.intercity.pl/index.php?page=Oferta_krajowa , many of them are as well listed on our Poland page (http://europetrainsguide.com/Countries/Poland/Poland-PKP.html).
Same Legitymacja Seniora needed for PKP Regionalne trains (OSO, Regio, InterRegio), offers for PKP Regionalnecan be found here - http://www.przewozyregionalne.pl/aktualne-oferty.html

Since not all the info is in English, then we advise you to use google translator, so you can figure out offers you might be interested in. And if you will have any further questions about those specific offers we are ready to help.

'Easy' daytime option (example for 20/01): 8:58am EuroCity train departure from Venice-St.Lucia, arrival to Milano Centrale at 11:25am, then you wait for regional train from Milano Centrale (12:20) to Tirano (14:50). Full fare for one through ticket Venice-Milan-Tirano cost 39.25 EUR (if you purchase ticket in advance, then you get -30% discount). In Tirano you will have 50 minutes to purchase ticket till Chur/Arosa (fares quoted in above post), then you will need to make couple changes:

All of the trains on the route from Tirano till Arosa wait for each other in case some a late.
'Cheaper' option: combination of regional trains from Venice to Milan and then to Tirano (use of regional train all the way from Venice will save you up to 15 EUR per person), dep. from Venice at 7:41am, 2 hour layover in Verona, arrival to Milan at 14:00, to Tirano at 16:50, again 50 minutes till next train to Switzerland. As result, you will arrive to Arosa 23:58.

955
"most enjoyable" in sense of sightseeing will be route via Tirano-Poschiavo-Pontresina (so called Bernina route), but it would be difficult to save on the leg Tirano-Arosa, since discounted tickets on the route is not available (you can buy them only on part St.Moritz-Chur-Arosa), thus you will need to pay full fare, which is 59 CHF (Tirano-Chur) or 68 CHF (Tirano-Arosa).
The only way to save (around 10 CHF) there is to purchase full fare Tirano-St.Moritz, then SuperSaver discounted tickets for part St.Moritz-Chur and Chur-Arosa (need to buy those in advance online). Venice-Tirano via Milan using regional trains cost app. 20 euro, if to use faster EuroCity trains for Venice-Milano leg, then you'll pay from 10 euro to 20 euro more.
You can also travel via Milano-Como S.-Lugano-Bellinzon-Chur, but it will take app. the same timing and you will need to do more 'tricks' with tickets in order to spend around same sum as via Tirano. Full fare via Como-Lugano will be more expensive, then via Tirano.

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: slovenia to odessa - ukraine
« on: December 30, 2010, 05:13:41 pm »
Well, if we are talking about one-way fare, then the route will be the same, but fare won't be just return/2.

Celje-Odesa one way via Hodos,Chop: Celje-Budapest (29 euro special one way ticket Ljubljana-Budapest), then it is better to purchase one through international ticket Budapest-Chop (recent price app. 4800 HUF or 17 euro), fares for direct Chop-Odesa (train #107) in above post. As you can see, in total it makes from 60 to 65 euro depending on type of carriage used on route Chop-Odesa.
The only problem with such rout is that connection from Slovenia doesn't really good for catching direct Chop-Odesa train, since 'Citadella' (Ljubljana-Budapest via Hodos, you will board it in Celje at 10:14) arrives to Budapest-Deli 17:45, then you jump to 'Tisza' train departing Budapest-Keleti at 18:40 (one hour layout is good enough to get from Deli to Keleti station and purchase the ticket), arrive to Chop at 1:13am. From here you either board Uzghorod-Moscow train till Lviv (dep. Chop at 4:18), go for a walk in Lviv and board overnight Lviv-Odesa or go to Uzghorod/Mukachevo and board additional train Uzghrod-Odesa (#557, departs everyday besides 7/01 from 2/01 till 11/01, 11:36/13:36-7:10 in Odesa). As you can count such route takes at least 42+ hours.

Celje-Odesa one way via Romania: Celje-Belgrade 43.4 euro (or 25 if you are lucky), then Belgrade-Bucuresti a bit less than 30 euro. Bucuresti-Galati from app. 10 euro, Reni-Odessa app. 6 euro= app. 90 euro or 72 if Ljubljana-Belgrade 25 euro ticket is used.
Now about timetable: best option for Celje-Belgrade is to board overnight train #315 in Zidani Most, thus you need to depart at 21:23, arrival to Belgrade at 6:11am. Belgrade-Bucuresti only direct train (15:50-6:07), Bucuresti-Galati either direct 9:00-13:32 or with change 7:30-12:51, god knows how much time you will need for Galati-Guirguleshti-Reni leg - distance isn't that big, but two borders and need to hitchhike might slow you down. Reni-Odesa by bus will take app. 6 hours + last bus from Reni might leave rather early, like 18 or 19 and not later. As result, your best timing will be to arrive to Odesa in the evening around 21-23. In total it makes around 48-50 hours.

The choice is yours ;)

p.s. you might take more reliable route Belgrade-Romania-Chisinau-Odesa to avoid Galati-Reni part, but it will take longer and will be even more expensive.

Just in case, we counted train option via Romania:
Celje-Belgrade return 69.6 euro, there is a limited amount of discounted 25 euro tickets Ljubljana-Belgrade (for you to board at Zidani Most), but chances to buy those for early January probably low.
Belgrade-Bucharest return cost 48 euro, Bucharest-Galati by train cost from 42 RON one way, but from Galati come difficulties, since there is no regular transport from that part of Romania to Ukraine, thus you will need to hitchhike via Modavian Giurguleshti to Ukrainian Reni, not far, but the road isn't busy, so you might wait for long time. Reni-Odesa by bus will be app. 60-70 UAH

We are afraid that airplanes on such short timing won't be cheap enough, especially taking into account holidays. Maybe if your date was farther away, then it would make sense to look at WizzAir from Treviso to Lviv or Kyiv, but for early January fares are already rather high.
So train option would probably be the cheapest one. Looking at the map route via Romania seems to be shortest in distance, but in real life going via Hungary-Chop would be easier and faster, because of problems reaching Odesa from Bucharest.
Celje-Zahony(last Hungarian station before Ukraine)-Celje via Hodos, Budapest will cost app. 60 euro due to Slovenia-Hungary return ticket discount. Zahony-Chop cost app. 4 euro return, but it is valid only 4 days, so if you stay longer in Ukraine, then you'll have to buy two one way tickets (app. 2.5 euro).
From Chop there is everyday direct train to Odesa (18:55-13:31), 193 UAH for 'kupe' and 148 UAH for 'platskartnyi'. There is also multiple options to travel with one change.

Petropavlovsk is shown as Petropavlovsk [27] and Petropavlovsk [20], so it means that station belongs to both RŽD and KTŽ, something like Salzburg to DB and OeBB.
Yes, basically transit line on that small part of northern Kazakhstan belongs to RZD, but, nevertheless, all the tickets bought there is payed in tenge and you'll have full scale border crossing, not 'green corridor'.
And I asked on MŽA forum about price of Kiev - Vladivostok T4 reservation - it's 70,83 CHF + VAT if bought in Ukraine (20%). Because it's defined in CHF, not EUR it means that for UZ cars, it's same price for MPGT and Vostok-Zapad.
No, this is a mistake. East-West tariff is in EUR. And according to UZ tariff table the numbers are correct, but the currency is EUR. So the person who advised you that just mixed up CHF with EUR.
It should be train 350LJ, which is shown in Hafas.
It should be in EPA, besides 350 Iv-F.-Kharkiv, 53OJ and 134JI are also seen in Hafas, so there are good chances that UZ gave the details about Kiev/Kharkiv-Vladivostok carriages as well.
Also, the price for City Star SK-RUS changed a little bit. Via Ukraine it's now cheaper, 84 EUR till 1500km in Russia, and 120 EUR up 1500km in Russia.
Good news, thanks for sharing it.

960
So, for platskart, the price is same during whole year? Will the prices remain same as in 2010?
