Train fares and tariffs / Re: Best Way to use my eurail select pass
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:41:00 pm »
you cannot use Thalys with that pass.
FYRA is limited to some hi-speed trains In NL now only and these require-also with that pass-the 2,30 supplmt to be paid. it is also NON RES. This does NOT mean you can sit anywhre-other people may have reserved and these seats are marked-for teh sector for whcih. So use eyes and look before sitting down. in Germany FRI and SUN afternoon-eves can be very busy.

NOte that railway official rules say, that even when the tickets have been bought, but not used in fysical appearance of the passenger, then the main conductor, or in Russia likely also the provodnitsa, is allowed by law to sell these places to someone wanting to travel last-minute. CAN-does not perse mean will.
I myself always wonder why people always rave about meeting other people on the train and then decide to rather not do that. Do you always buy more airplane tickets to have noone beside you?

All other train travel questions / Re: Where to buy Balkan Flexipass
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:35:44 pm »
1. in the past wasteesl at BP-Keleti was reported to sell this pass-at ROM prices, but this has stopped 2-3 years ago.
2.as there is the special 1way fare for just 15/16 eur-pay in HUF for BP-all the way to Beograd, this is also the cheapest way to reach Subotica-so there is no real need to get off there and buy BFP. Stay on to Beograd and have plenty of time.
You save hardly 1 eur by using local MAV ticket to border and cross on yourself or via Szeged-but loose plenty of hours. Just realistic thinking.
3. NOTE that BFP when sold IN the area concerened, it now only allows 1 return IN that country to border and no unlimited travel. This a bit similar to Interrail, but without need to buy extra ticket. Reports that they do check that now mainly in Romania, so be warned.

compared to walk in fares in the UK this is much, much cheaper- even at the local full fare.
But you can do it even for less-use these main principles-obvious to continental Europeans, often not that much to UKers.
Decide first what ''sleeper'' you want- best insight is in seat61.com. Basic choice is between the couchette and the real sleeper=vagon dormit/spalny vagon. Most nighttrains also have plain, normal seats.
the idea that trains are ''full'' is plain silly ignorance. trains are not planes.
IF online booking at all is possible (by no means take that for granted!) then you must use the railway operation of the country you start from. Just think of them as mails-you cannot use a Brit stamp in Spain, nah? not even to send a postcard back to UK.
Again seat61 often has the way to do-but also realise (again trains are not planes) that booking-if at all possible-ionly from 60-or often oevr there just 30 days advance.
Yes-the train into IST is cut back-there are many more, cheaper, faster, bsues for SOF-IST. Currently only cut back to outer suburban IST- but this can change by the day, without warning.

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: From Bucharest to Athena
« on: December 01, 2012, 10:14:06 am »
much better to use direct bus from Sofia-compare prices, as going onward to ATH may not cost much more. Sofia has a good new busstation-all signposted, left of main BDZ and also still the humble-jumble of 3d world offices in front of station. Compare both for departures and best price.
IF you can preplan your train trip by OSE then prebook-and hope+pray its possible- as they have now the advance sale tactic-singles from 9 eur- or 19/29 etc. May work out cheaper as that railpass.
That changing to GR bus from border across KUlata-well-do that only if you have seas of time.

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Paris to Vlissingen on Sunday July 21,2012
« on: November 23, 2012, 02:01:23 pm »
these are your other options; NOte that NOW nothing can yet be booked-only 2-3 month before and prices go UP on 1/1-NL and 1/2-13=BE-with a few %.
1. Thalys -1/day direct to BRUGGE or ev 30 mins via Brussel and option for ''any BE=-station''-trains BRU-BRUgge run 2/3 per hour and are unreserved. Good way to also see Brugge!
In Brugge bus Veolia/deLIJN runs ev hour to BRESKENS- in 80 mins- buy ticket from driver, about 5/6 eur each.
This bus ends at the ferry-free winter- 2/3 eur/pp summertime, with nice views as you approach Vlissingen- takes 15/20 mins.
This way is about same time as Thalys via Rotterdam but a lot cheaper.
2. ONLY sat-sun there is a direct bus by veolia-Connexion-ev 2 hrs, to MIDDELBURG, but not from the main station in Gent. Find tiems via 9292.nl=our national routeplanner. Likely better to also use a bus as Vlissingen train is far from town-and there are 4-6 buses/hr from Mbg.
3. as per dec the slower hourly benelux trains will NOT run anymore-that means from Antwerpen a slow all stops local to Roosendaal and then change-NL times will also change a lot from then. You can cut off by using the bus from Antwerpen delIJN to PUTTE grens=Moretuslei-and change to the Dutch bus veolia to bergen op Zoom-and catch the very same train as from Roosendaal.
These are all local buses-pay driver for tickets.

Train fares and tariffs / Re: If you are a EU OAP ....
« on: November 12, 2012, 09:44:39 am »
ONLY in HUngary this is! In most countries you can buy a pass-reduction card for various prices that then gives discount. I have made an overview-will try to put online shortly.

between Menton-Monaco-Nice and Nice-Cannes -and also Grasse are buses-2/3 per hour, that cost just 1 eur/ride. pay driver. In the SUMMERperiod only you can buy a dayticket for the trains in that area-start from ventimiglia, for 8 or 9 eur or so 9cheaper pp for a group) Carte Isabelle. you canNOT buy the french tickets in ventim from the ITalian windows!
