Train fares and tariffs / Travel in Switzerland
« on: July 18, 2012, 03:16:08 am »
After Budapest, Vienna and Salzburg we will spend about two weeks in Zurich. (Got the tickets, thank you for your help.) From there we intend to explore Switzerland. We are thinking about We were taking  Bern/Lausanne, Gruyere, Basel, Ticino,  Luzern/Pilatus, maybe Appenzell/St. Gallen, probably one or two more plus some smaller trips.

What makes financially the most sense? I saw a 6 day Flexipass $366, 15 day consecutive $421 (per person with 2 traveling together). Can we do better with individual tickets? Is the convenience factor sufficient for a pass?  The 15 day pass is tempting, but is it worth it? IF yes are we better off buying in the USA or wait until Swizterland so that we can check special offer availability and make up our mind then?

Thank you so much for all your help, Karin

Thank you so much for all your help. That makes so much sense. I did buy the Budapest Vienna ticket and could not have done it without your help (online guide). Two more to go. Thanks again, Karin

Train fares and tariffs / Budapest to Vienna, to Salzburg, to Zurich
« on: June 21, 2012, 02:50:39 am »
We want to travel from Budapest to Vienna on August 9 then From Vienna to Salzburg on August 11 and from Salzburg to Zurich on August 13.  Can I buy a ticket from Budapest to Zurich and have two interruptions or do I need to buy individual tickets for each "leg"? That means I buy Budapest Vienna from MAV and the other 2 from Austrian train service?

Thank you, Karin

Train fares and tariffs / Budapest Vienna
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:07:53 pm »
I am not able to get prices let alone book a ticket from Budapest to Vienna on August 9.
For the worst, could I just buy a ticket once I am in Budapest?

What I tried: I went to the MAV webpage, following the Hungary-MAV guide. I am getting only to the point where I choose the date and put in my birth date. After that I press the "Tickets and Prices" button and get: "No offer available for the journey with these conditions. For a list of available offers click here" BUT that leads to a dead end. So how can I find offers and book them.

Thank you for your help, Karin

Train fares and tariffs / Zurich Budapest

I'm seriously confused about the cheapest option to travel from Zurich to Budapest (arrival August 5) later from Vienna to Salzburg and Salzburg to Zurich.

I think "Sparschiene" might be cheapest, but I am in the USA and I guess you can only buy directly at a train station? I might be able to get a friend to buy it for us in person. But is this the best option or are there others out there that I can't find?? How about the return?

I hope somebody can give me some advise. Thank you so much, Karin
