Train fares and tariffs / Price of Barcelona to Bratislava
« on: September 01, 2011, 11:03:52 pm »
Hi again

Do you know (or can you quickly find out) the price for this route (the exact route isn't important, but through SE France, Switzerland and Austria looks the best).... I'm thinking about buying a normal ticket and stopping off in a couple of places - is it only return tickets which allow you to do this?

And while I'm here...

Do you know any tricks to reduce the cost of Bratislava to Liverpool by train (one way would be best) The cheapest I can get it to is about 180 Euro each way including some couchettes etc (if my memory is right) - can it be done cheaper???

Thanks

Alex  :)

"What I am looking for advice on is whether it is best to get this Eurorail pass or book the regional trains which seem to be cheaper and slower."

I'm reading between the lines here, but I get the impression that you think 'Eurorail' sell tickets for all the fast trains, and each country is left with the regional trains. This is not true - groups like 'Eurorail' are just expensive resellers. Have a look at the advice already given, there are plenty of ticket options. You'll only know which is cheaper when you have a concrete itinerary - then you can compare a pass vs point to point.

It'll take 2 or 3 days to get from London to Croatia, so you won't really be able to stop much on the way. Take a cheap flight (there are always cheap flights from London) - this will give you more time to explore Croatia. Be sure to go to Trogir (very near Split), because its a wonderful place :)

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Bratislava to Prague
« on: February 22, 2011, 11:38:24 pm »
Hi tUt

Just got back from my trip to Prague and I wanted to let you know that I got my SC reservation for free - did they make a mistake? I know that it is free for some tickets - but when I read it (bearing in mind that I don't really speak Slovak) it seemed to say that it was for 1st class, discounted cards, etc, etc.

I bought my City Star at Bratislava station, then asked for two reservations for the SC from Prague to BA. The lady was very confused, and tried to convince me the train didn't exist! Eventually she gave me the reservations, which cost 0 Euro.

p.s - the train is super - well worth getting.

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Europe Disaster.. Need serious Help

I know for a fact that you'll get great help on this forum, but you need to provide some sort of a plan, something which is clearer. Look on wiki or whatever, and work out the places you really want to go to. The bahn.de site isn't that hard to navigate - I think its the easiest.

So your trip is quite a long one? I think you can see many places, but jumping from North to South, then back to the North, then out East etc isn't the best idea maybe. Its going to be a fun trip when you get it all planned  :)

Thanks tUt, most helpful. I think I've just asked for a 'return' in the past, and they gave me a City Star (it was 33 Euro last year I think).

But don't you need to specify which train you will take with a City Star? I know which trains I want to take, but I'm just wondering for the future.

Also, I'm planning to return on the SC train (for which I need a 8 Euro reservation). My question is, can I buy this return reservation in Bratislava, or will I have to wait until I'm in Prague?

Hi - I'm a little bit confused by something. I will be traveling to Prague soon (2 of us) and I was wondering which is cheapest (if indeed there is any difference).

1. Buy a City Star (its about 34 Euro for one person I believe?) - for two?

2. Just buy a normal return ticket (there is quite a big international discount)

I have a feeling they work out the same, but maybe I'm wrong?

Thanks

Alex

Train fares and tariffs / 2-berth sleeper (Slovakia?)
« on: February 07, 2011, 11:35:02 am »
Do I need to buy a first class ticket if I want to reserve a 2-berth sleeper compartment (for travel inside Slovakia)?

I looked on Slovak Rail website and it says I do, but I thought this was usually the case with a 1 berth compartment?

Most night trains contain couchettes AND sleepers...

Couchettes hold either 4 or 6 people, and as far as I'm aware they are mixed gender

Sleepers can be for 1-3 people, and they are single gender unless you book the whole compartment....

So a husband and wife can stay together, providing you ask for (and pay for) a two-person sleeper

This is my understanding - I'm sure tUt will confirm or amend :)

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Fare for Bratislava to Warsaw

Cheers for your answers. I actually have one more question. A two-berth sleeper is priced at 140 Zloty

http://www.polrail.com/sections/travel/sleeping_cars.html

Is this per person? Its quite expensive if so, maybe? And this will be the fee for domestic and international trains heading to Poland?

Thanks tUT, thats excellent information.

So, I can get off in Warsaw in the morning, and catch the night train to Gdansk on the same day, using the same ticket? I imagine I just buy some berth reservations at the station in Warsaw?

Also, can you explain your sums to me. I'm keen to be able to work these things out independently, but I'm confused. Lets just use the Slovak leg as an example: why is it 9.4*2*0.4? I understand that 9.4 Euros is the price for 71 km, and the 2 is presumably because its a return. But why times it by 0.4? Maths was never my best subject, so I'm probably missing something extremely obvious!

Hi - I'm planning to catch the overnight train to Warsaw, spend the day there, and then catch a night train to Gdansk (I know this is a short trip, but this way I can see Warsaw and not have to pay for a hotel). I will probably do the same (or similar) on the way back.

I've seen the price for the Warsaw to Gdansk bit (can't remember, but the price was quite cheap), but how much is BA to Warsaw? I know its based on the tariff (with the bi-lateral discounts), but how can I work this out myself? Is the tariff online? Is it just a case of finding out the km's and doing some maths?!

And finally - is it best to but the international ticket, then the domestic one - or can I 'break' an international ticket?

Thanks in advance

Alex

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Bratislava to Stuttgart
« on: August 20, 2010, 12:58:45 pm »
Many thanks to both of you. I have passed on your information tUt, and its nice that you provided a translation, JFK.

Going slightly off-topic - does anybody know if return tickets are cheaper than single tickets in Slovakia? Or is it all just done on the tariff (so its the same price regardless)? Just wondering, as I never know what to ask for, and the English version of the Slovak Rail website lacks detail.

Train fares and tariffs / Bratislava to Stuttgart
« on: August 19, 2010, 03:49:30 pm »
Hi

A friend has asked me to look into the cheapest way between these two cities. I'm going to advise her to book a Spar Scheine ticket through the OBB website (Vienna to Stuttgart) - there are a few left for her travel date in mid-October for 39 Euro, and a few more for 49 Euro, which is far cheaper than the standard on-the-day ticket.

I was wondering if there are any other options/tricks I could explore? Can anybody offer some advice?

Also, am I right that the return tickets from Bratislava to Vienna are only valid for one day after they have been stamped (I know that its one month unused)

Thanks for your help  :)

As tUt says, you should have no problem with the language... I always use the term Vienna and I am always understood, but the Slovak or the Austrian will all do...

2 Points to note. If you go to Hlavna Stanica, make sure you follow tUt's advice and go to the counter nearest the platform (you have to go up 3 or 4 small steps)... the first ones you see are for domestic tickets only.

Second, the 10.34 train leaves from Bratislava Petrzalka station - make sure you go to the correct station! :)

Also, the counters have a sign which states that you must tell them you'll use a credit card before you ask for your ticket - I always follow this advice, because you never know...
