All other train travel questions / Where to buy Balkan Flexipass
« on: May 27, 2013, 01:42:46 pm »
Hi,

Is it possible to buy the Balkan Pass out of the Balkan countries? (2nd class)

I think there is a Wasteels office at the Budapest Keleti station. Can they sell it there?

There is usually not enough time in Subotica to get out of the train and buy it there so I'd have to buy the ticket all the way to Belgrade (whereas I could use the Pass already on Subotica-Belgrade).

Train fares and tariffs / Europa-Special question
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:22:52 am »
Hi,

Soon I will travel with a Europa-Special Connection from Kehl to Budapest two way.  This is what is written on my ticket:

H: <1080>(07.05.2013)NV*FR-Hbf 17:30 BUS42111/M-Ha.Br*NV*(08.05.2013) Salzbur 7:02 RJ49

R: <1080>(12.05.2013)NV*(13.05.2013)KA-Hbf 5:42 IC60458/Offenbg*NV

VIA: Salzburg<1181>Purkersdorf-Sana.*Wien*Kledering*Hegyeshalom(Gr)<1155>Gyoer

I understad that the "zugbinding" works only in Germany and once I cross the border I may take virtually any train according to the VIA section. My timetable suggests Railjet from Salzburg to Budapest both ways. However, I on my way 'there' I arrive in Salzburg at 0:42 (RE from Munich) so I wouldn't like to wait overnight, but move onwards with EN to Budapest at 2am or 4am to Budapest, or at least with the early morning IC train o VIenna (to sleep in a train and not in the city). At least that was my intention when I was buying the ticket but ...

1. "Salzbur 7:02 RJ49" - that means even in Austria I am 'binded' to the morning Railjet? I've never seen it before for connections abroad... It's a first time I see it !! (nothing like that on the return ticket)

2. If for some reasons I am not binded in Austria, can I use any of the EN trains to arrive in Budapest earlier? I don't see reservation obligation for both EN trains... (at least not in Austria and Hungary). It's only the one at 2am which is globally priced.

Train fares and tariffs / Beograd Sofia price
« on: December 08, 2012, 10:47:51 am »
I can't find price info on Beograd-Sofia connection (return)

I have a BC25 card with RAILPLUS.

Will it be cheaper to buy direct return Beograd-Sofia or two return Beograd-Nis and Beograd-Sofia (the second one seems cheaper comparing ZS and jizdenka-50%(SET)).

It is important for me that I can make stopovers as I plan to visit Nis and Pirot on my way.

Train fares and tariffs / Online ticket + reservation with CD Shop
« on: November 29, 2012, 01:19:41 pm »
I'm trying to buy an online ticket for the EuroNight Praha-Budapest route. However, for each date (before or after 8 Dec), the system always says that the selected seat is not available:

Vašemu požadavku nebylo možné vyhovět. Neplatný tarif pro daný počet cestujících nebo službu.

Is there any way to buy such an onlin EN ticket with the CD ? (I try to get the ahead promo fare)

All other train travel questions / Sparpreis vs late trains
« on: November 20, 2012, 11:57:41 am »
Hello,

I'm gonna travel as follows:

1. Beograd-Budapest with a normal ticket
2. Budapest - Kehl (french/german border) with the europa-special (29 eur with BC25 !!).

The problem is that I have only 16 minutes to change trains in Budapest Keleti.

In case if my miss my connection (and I have a proof for that on the Beograd-Budapest ticket), will I be still able to travel with my europa-special all the way to Kehl or just up to the German border and then I need to buy a new ticket or pray that german ticket officers understand my situation and allow me to travel anyway?

I understand that with the Europa Special in I can use only the specified trains in Germany, but abroad I can use any of them, so in this case I may get to Salzburg anyway. The problem is only the german part.

If I take the former train from Beograd I'll have to wait in Budapest more than 7 hours. Not bad for sightseeing after all, but I'd rather prefer to stay longer in Beograd.

It's not sure yet, but due to austerity measures, from the new timetable the HZ plans to cancel these cross-border trains which carry less than 30 passengers on average. In the worst case ALL railway connections to Hungary and Bosnia will be lost. The following trains are not endangered (one pair daily):

-  Zagreb - Vienna
-  Beograd - Zagreb - Villach
-  Zagreb - Villach - Frankfurt
-  Beograd - Zagreb – Zurich.

And these would operate summer only:

-  Budimpešta - Split
-  Sarajevo - Ploče.

Trains return on Podgorica Niksic !!

Finally !!

Moreover, the local train service on Nis-Dimitrovgrad in Serbia was reintroduced (formerly only one night train per day, shame as the scenery is really beautiful)

Greece reconnected?  But only once a week, July until September!

Greece cancelled all its international passenger trains in February 2011, cutting itself off from the rest of Europe other than by ferry.  However, there's now a glimmer of hope, as they have just reinstated a weekly train between Skopje and Thessaloniki, at least until September.  It departs Skopje at 05:05 every Saturday from 14 July to 30 September, arriving Thessaloniki 10:24.  Northbound, it departs Thessaloniki every Sunday at 20:11 arriving Skopje at 23:11.  For trains between London/Paris/Munich and Skopje, see the Serbia & Macedonia page.  You will need to stay overnight in Skopje.  The fare is 756 dinars one-way, about €10.

I cannot find this train in both ose.gr and mzi.mk

As I'm planning to travel there soon, I'd love to know the intermediate stops details...

Train fares and tariffs / Global Price/Globalpreis Tariff
« on: May 30, 2012, 08:52:10 pm »
What does the "GLOBAL PRICE" really mean ??

Is it better or worse than non-global-priced train?

I'd like to find a definite answer for that ...

As far as I understand it means that it is possible to get an extra price, that is cheaper that it would result from the standard fare (internal/international), but it does not prevent me from boarding this train with an ordinary ticket (+ reservation if necessary).

Thanks :-)

Filip.

Hello,

I'm interested in the reimbursement rules for international tickets in case of late arrival / missing connection.

(any external documents appreciated as well)

Are they the same for all the CIV participating countries (in case of international ticket)?

Do they / How much do they reimburse in case of late arrival (depending on the latency time)? For a long trip with a few changes, I can imagine that being late in the end is something very probable... (I guess there may be a difference here between connection-bonded and standard 'open' SCIC-NRT tickets)

In case if an overnight stay is required because of the missed connection, can I simply get an accommodation and be sure I'll get the money back?

In case if I loose a daily connection and need to travel with an overnight train, will I get a couchette reimbursement? (either if the train is sleepers-only or if I take it just for my comfort)

In case if I miss my connection and the alternative train does not follow the same route, should I buy a new ticket for a separate branch (and get reimbursed later) or can I simply board the other train?

Can I handle the demand to any of the participating railways?

Best regards,

Filip.

Train fares and tariffs / Stopovers with EUROPA-SPECIAL ticket
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:14:07 am »
I'm wondering...

At my online Europa-Special ticket (it's Europa-Kroatien specifically) for Offenburg-Zagreb, it's written (A loose translation from German):

"DB: Valid only for the specific trains on the specific days."

Then at the 'VIA' section of the ticket the train numbers and departures of trains are specified, but only for the German part. I mean I need to take IC/ICE trains in Offenburg, Heidelberg, Munich and Villach. The first 3 departures (train numbers) are clearly specified in the VIA section, but the one in Villach is not (There is only standard 'via' ...Salzburg*Villach* Jesenice...). However this change is required and it's marked on my timetable under the ticket. Moreover, the small print above ticket says it is valid for one month as typical TCV ...

Thus, as in Subject :-)

0. Am I allowed to make stopovers once I leave Germany?

Then, if the answer is yes... :-)

1. Is there any official info about it to print-out and show just in case of problems?

2. The 'VIA' section specifies a departure from Munich. Do I need to use this train until Villach or can I make a stopover even immediately after crossing the DB/OBB border?

3. As at the usual DB online ticket, I have my timetable written below. Will it not make any trouble if I use different trains? (I mean already outside DB). This timetable wouldn't be there if I had bought the ticket not online but at the desk and I'm pretty sure it's just an information, not an obligation (One may buy a Lander-Ticket this way and have anything printed there, yet the ticket will be valid all around the land the whole day)

PS. I've done that once in Slovenia, in Ljubljana I was waiting for my EC to Munich but there was a local train leaving to Jesenice one hour in advance and I've decided to see this small town before. I've just asked the ticket inspector before entering the train if I can travel to Jesenice and wait there or do I need to stay here. He looked at the ticket briefly and said sure no problem. Yet I don't know if he did it according to the rules or he did not know them / didn't care :-)

Train fares and tariffs / SLOVENIA - making stops with return tickets
« on: November 16, 2011, 01:34:20 pm »
Sorry, this question can be a bit too 'local' but maybe someone knows the answer... I still did not get any reply from the Slovenian Railways.

Me and my friend are visiting Slovenia this weekend. We would like to use 30% discount on weekend return connections offer.
However, some details are not clear at their website:

1. Can we make stops on our way?

We would like to travel on Zidani Most - Maribor line and stop at each of those places listed:

On Saturday:         Zidani Most - Lasko - Celje - Pragersko (overnight stay here, then continue next day)
On Sunday:           Pragersko - Maribor - Zidani Most.

Can we simply buy only one return ticket Zidani Most -Maribor -Zidani Most ?
Can we buy an IC return ticket and use LP/RG trains with this ticket?
Or buy ICS return ticket and use IC, LP trains also? (this can be complicated due to compulsory reservation in ICS)

This would save us money and time comparing to buying short distance single tickets.

Train fares and tariffs / TCV tariffs per country
« on: September 28, 2011, 01:48:53 pm »
Hello,

I was wondering, how are the TCV prices calculated?

I guess it's like sum of (NumberOfKms)*(TCVfarePerKm) for all the countries the ticket runs through. Of course the fare per km is different for different countries and for some it's linear (Czech) and for some not (Poland).

I'm just looking at the example of Poland. For all the routes I've compared (I've checked internal routes in Poland with jizdenka) the TCV is approximately the price of IC/EX/EIC trains (most expensive), where the trip one would normally do with twice cheaper and and just slightly slower TLK

Is the TCV is established per km per country as the most expensive / fastest possible train fare per number of kms?

I was wondering if there's any document onliine with the TCV tariffs per kilometer (or for various distances if not linear) for different countries?

I'd be also interested in the SET.

Thanks,

Filip.

Train fares and tariffs / Poland-Macedonia two way (Wroclaw-Skopje)
« on: August 23, 2011, 07:15:00 pm »
Hello :-)

After our succesful trip around SCG, we're planning to visit Macedonia soon. Thus question how to get there cheap. Because of Your help :-), we know now how to get to Beograd cheaply.  We'll try to do as follows:

1. Sparscheine to Budapest  (Warszawa-Budapest 29eur or Praha-Budapest 19eur + local tickets wrom Wroclaw to Katowice or Pardubice) or if we fail then Citystar Bohumin-Budapest (+local trains from Wroclaw). Local, as we have 51% discount in Poland.

2. For Budapest-Skopje branch (we'd like to stop in Subotica, Beograd and Nis for at least couple of hours), should we simply get reurn Budapest-Beograd then Beograd-Skopje or Return for the whole?

Thanks :-)

FiIip.
