Ok great, I just didn't want to miss the train ride by going on a bus if possible and had looked at spending a night in Užice as it seemed to be a good 1/2 way point between Belgrade and Podgorica.

At least I know that there is a possibility and good connection.  I'll be researching my flights in the up coming months and then after that will probably have more questions as usual with the finer details depending on where my final departure city will be.  But yes, as I have heard, the train over the bus on this route is amazing.  Going from Belgrade to Ljubljana (via Zagreb) would be my back up plan if flights out of Tirana, Podgorica or even Dubrovnik would be too much in comparison.  So just wanted to see what the options where before I end up buying my flight...

So planning my next adventure again for next May (kind of early), but was curious to know if there are any locations between Belgrade and Zagreb, or between Belgrade and Podgorica that are worth while to stop for a night or two at?

Trip A) would be Belgrade to Zagreb to Ljubljana or
Trip B) would be Belgrade to Podgorica with Kotor, one of the beach towns and then ending in Tirana.

Buses seem to be about 9 hours and the train seems to be around 12-14 hours (Belgrade to Podgorica).  Now I've heard the train between those two cities has supposedly one of the nicest views so taking a night train would kind of defeat the purpose, but I don't want to sit for 14 or so hours on a train either.

So was trying to see if there are any towns along the way I could break up the trip with at all?  Was also thinking if I did the other trip to Zagreb, if there was anything near 1/2 way between Belgrade and Zagreb that would be worthwhile to stop for a night or so?

Just trying to get a idea on this part for now so I can then plan my flight schedule.  Thanks as always...

Yes I will be up nice and early, so will have to check out the times and such, but figure that would be a nice way to travel and see the countryside on the train rather than 'another' bus...

Thanks for the info.  I actually did find that Krilo website after I had posted this a day or so later, and that one has a lot more ferries to Hvar Town (forgot to mention not Stari Grad, though guess there are numerous buses from Stari Grad to Hvar Town as well).

I have heard the train from Mostar to Sarajevo is really wonderful scenery so I may opt to do that for something fun.

  Thanks again...

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Split - Sarajevo

Ok, just booked the actual flight now.  Arriving in Split and leaving from Sarajevo for Mid May.

Day 1 - Split
- Arriving in the early evening and spending the night there
(I hear there is an airport bus to take me into town)

Hvar (3 or 4 nights)
- Taking the boat (I saw one that operates mid May (http://www.jadrolinija.hr/en/ferry-croatia)

Not sure if there are others or better ones with better times or not (this one shows only an afternoon departure).
Trying to see if 4 nights or 3 nights would be best depending on day trip options

Split (2 nights)
- Again the only boat I saw was (http://www.jadrolinija.hr/en/ferry-croatia)
- two nights just to road around the city and maybe take a day trip.

Mostar (2 Nights)
- What's the best option here?  I know there are a few limited buses, but which seem to be the best?

Sarajevo (4 nights or so)
 - I hear there are daily buses, not sure about trains.  What is the best option for going between Mostar to Sarajevo?

So that's the trip.  Just needing to know if there are other boats other than the one I listed above in Mid May between Split and Hvar and back.  Also best option between Split and Mostar and Mostar and Sarajevo.

Just need to figure out day trip options in Hvar/Split and Mostar and or Sarajevo to see how many nights I should spend in each.

Thanks again.  At least this time I have the flight booked...

Great thanks again.  And will be usually booking in early Feb (as I always get the best prices).  Though may have to do some changing though and always good to get an idea of connections before hand in some of these places which you always give great advice and have helped me on my travels for years...

Great.  Thanks for clarifying the buscroatia website that I had found.  I will just look at the actual companies sites to get an idea of what they offer and times (and travel times as well).

I always get tickets the day of or sometimes the evening before I travel.  Think the only time I booked in advance was Luxexpress once and that was it.

Good to know about the Kotor route then.  No need to go through Podgorica then if they have direct buses between Kotor and Ulcinj (if I can avoid stopping in Bar that is).

Thanks again and hopefully the flight prices are good when I book in Feb, but these past two inquiries at least lets me know what I can expect for travel options...

Yes I did look at Ulcinj did look pretty interesting and figure it would be a lot nicer and more interesting geographically than Bar was anyways.  So one of the best flight prices seems to be flying into Dubrovnik.

So most likely I'd do Dubrovnik (arrive and leave next morning) -> (Mostar 2 nights) -> Dubrovnik (3 nights) -> Kotor (2 nights) -> Ulcinj (2 nights) -> Tirana (3 nights)

So with that I assume most these would have to be done by bus rather than train for time?

Dubrovnik -> Mostar  using (http://www.buscroatia.com/dubrovnik-mostar/)
Mostar -> Dubrovnik using (http://www.buscroatia.com/dubrovnik-mostar/)?  Or is there another option?

Dubrovnik -> Kotor using ?  Buscroatia again?

Kotor -> Ulcinj using ?  (would I have to take a bus to Podgorica and then another bus to Ulcinj?

Ulcinj -> Tirana using (http://www.busstation-ulcinj-montenegro.com/index.php/departure-timetable-bus-lines-in-ulcinj-central-coach-station.html)

So trying to find the fastest way between these locations above.

Thanks again for the help...

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Croatia to Albania
« on: January 05, 2015, 07:53:50 pm »
I was looking at flights and my previous trip looks like it'll be a lot cheaper flying into Dubrovnik and leaving from Tirana.

I know you have helped me with the transportation between Dubrovnik and Kotor.  I am now curious how travel is between Montenegro and Albania?

Is there fairly easy transportation options from Bar to any interesting cities between there and Tirana?  And then to Tirana as my final destination?

Or even skipping Bar and going from Kotor to a beach place like Shëngjin or something similar?

I'll have 2 weeks so just trying to fill up my trip with a mix of beach (?), mountains (Kotor), city (Dubrovnik, Tirana) and just was curious how transportation is on the Albanian side.

Thanks

Great.  I'll just base out of Kotor and maybe do a day trip or something somewhere then.  And good to know about the tickets.  Usually I always get tickets the day before at the station, but just because it's early in May this year, I didn't know if buses/trains were less frequent and more packed, but doesn't seem like the case.

Hope I can get enough time to visit all the places, but I'm sure I'll figure it out I'm sure.  Thanks again...

Yeah, I think Kotor is a must at least for 2 nights.  Seems most the beaches anyways in Montenegro are pretty much rocky beach so I can always just skip that or maybe do a night in Budva and just check out the pub scene at least or just skip it altogether and go from Podgorica to Kotor (is Herceg Novi worth it to visit?).

With Split, I just figured it was the easiest place to go from Mostar without a long bus journey.  But I may opt to just try and spend a night there and then a few in Hvar instead and go from there to end up in Zagreb eventually.

Main point is that I see that everything between Podgorica and Zagreb and the towns I've mentioned will be pretty easily connected by buses and I shouldn't have an issue getting to any city or town between the two.  Do you think I'd need to book any thing in advance (ferry, bus) for any of the trips?  Hvar especially or Mostar?  I would think most the buses and trains I can just get the day of or a day or two in advance while I am there...

Great thanks again for the info.

Yes I chose Budva as I was thinking it was one of the better "beach type" atmosphere towns in Montenegro.  I was trying to find something that had some nice beaches and had a lot of the beach style pubs etc (sort of like Montenegro's version of Sunny Beach in Bulgaria).  I have heard nice things about Sveti Stefan, but figured that was harder to get to and a lot smaller and Bar seemed to be out of the way and not on a direct link between Podgorcia and Dubrovnik.

Split I decided because it was just kind of central between Dubrovnik and Zagreb.  I would have chosen Hvar (as I heard that was good), but thought with the ferries and such that it would take too much time to reach on my schedule, plus I thought the beaches near there are actually outside of Hvar and not near the town.   But maybe that isn't the case as you seem to think I will have more than enough time doing all this in my 2 weeks?

So how are the buses between Dubrovnik and Herceg Novi?  Are they relatively common?

So trying to get a good idea of what would be the best option for my next trip and before I get the airfare.  Going to plan to spend some time in each city mentioned, this will be a 2 week trip in the Spring (May)

Option 1
Fly into Zagreb - Split - Mostar - Dubrovnik - Budva - fly out of Podgorcia

Seems there is a good train and bus between Zagreb and Split.  And see there is a bus service to Mostar from Split and Dubrovnik.  I assume there is no train service between Dubrovnik and Budva though and the best is to just take the bus to Budva and then I see a lot of buses from Budva on (www.busterminal.me/) to Podgorcia?

Would you say that all those cities would be easily accessible by either train/bus (mostly bus I would think closer to Montenegro and Bosnia) with multiple times a day every day?

Option 2
Fly into and out of Zagreb - Sarajevo - Mostar - Dubrovnik - (Maybe Budva if time) - Split - Zagreb

With this option do you think with bus/train this route would be doable?  How are the services between Zagreb and Sarajevo?  I would think there would be a lot of buses or trains from Sarajevo to Mostar?

Trying to figure out if this options would give me a few days in each place and be able to get back to Zagreb without feeling too rushed?

My ultimate goal would be to visit at least 3 countries on this trip (Croatia, Bosnia and either Montenegro or Slovenia) and be able to spend some time at least in all 3 in a 2 week period.

Thanks again...

... just make sure that for the day you intend to travel on there are no changes in schedule or something like that

Oh good advice and I'll do that.  Leaving at that time will give me extra time there and hopefully beat some of the crowds at the castle parts at least.

Never tried it, but according to wikipedia it is allowed  ;)

Yes I read a lot that says it is, I just want make sure I don't get in trouble.  I contacted Bahn already, so will see if they respond...

That would save me some money at least.  And I assume I don't even need to leave the train, just show the Bayern pass at Kaufbeuren when asked by the conductor assuming the train doesn't leave there before 9am correct?    Trains I also assume will never leave early either, meaning I won't get caught leaving Kaufbeuren and it's not quite 9am?

Oh another question about the German trains, is one allowed to bring a bottle of wine to just drink in 2nd class?  I have heard this is not a problem, but every nation I think is different and would like to just make sure I am allowed to do this heading back from Füssen to Munich?
