Travel plans, routes and timetables / Vilnuis-Riga-Tallinn
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:14:43 pm »
Ok before I get my flight out there, I would like to know how easy/not easy taking the train or bus be  between these cities?

The idea would be for the end of May and I would take the first train/bus from Vilnuis to Riga, and then a few days later from Riga to Tallinn.

I have heard debates on the schedule for the train (not as frequent between Vilnuis and Riga etc), while the bus has more options.  I've also heard the train is much better and so forth.  So just curious how easy it would be to travel between these cities as I will only have a bit less than 2 weeks.

Oh and these would be from the city Center Main stations for each city.  And I've looked at http://www.litrail.lt but am having problems with the website...

Again this trip isn't definite as of yet, but if it looks like it would be fairly simple than I would probably book it if flights are good...

  Thanks

Ok great, that will probably be easier to just show them Ostrava*Zebrzydowice(Gr)*Oswiecim then.  And then with the ticket I should be able to board any train leaving that day then.  Even if I want to take an early train to Bohumin...

Ok great.  I have it written down as follows which I can show them on paper and hopefully they can understand what I am trying to do in case they don't speak English:

Ostrava hl.n   Prijezd:  5:40  Odjezd: 5:42   Spoj: OS 3301

Bohumin       Prijezd:  6:28  Odjezd:  6:31   Spoj: OS 3050

Czechowice   Prijezd: 7:30   Odjezd:  7:35   Spoj: RR 43342
Dziedzice

Oświęcim       Prijezd: 8:16

And hopefully they can give me a single ticket with this and if I miss my connection in say Czechowice I'll just jump on the next train then...

Ok well that's good then that the ticket would be available for any trains on that route.  So the day before I could book the train trip via Bohumin and Czechowice Dziedzice doing the time I specified above.

Then I could get to the Ostrava hl.n station early and catch either the 5:15 or 5:42 train to Bohumin, get off and then have a longer time to wait for the original train to Czechowice and Oświęcim.

The reason for this is I noticed if I missed the connection in Bohumin, then the next trains to Czechowice add even more stops and changes.  If I miss the Czechowice train, there are several others that have direct trains to Oświęcim, so I 'm not worried about missing the Czechowice connection at all, but the Bhoumin one is the one I just can't miss.

So with that, I should be allowed to board an earlier train that day then correct to Bohumin and then catch the original train to Czechowice and that would give me a little over an hour or 1/2 an hour depending which earlier train I had to make that connection in Bohumin?

Ok good, I may be a bit disoriented trying to find the trains so wasn't sure how the connections worked and might be worried about getting stranded as I'm not sure how big each station is or how many platforms there are at each one.  Looked at Google Earth, but not entirely sure.

The only issue with the Tesin Cieszyn trick is that there doesn't seem to be very good times for the trains there to Oświęcim.  And I'm not finding any information about the buses there.  I was able to find the bus schedule from Krakow to Cieszyn easily though, but not from Cieszyn to Oświęcim.

Ok I can check that out.  I did notice though there is a train that leaves from Ostrava to Oswiecim on May 25th at 6:19am as well.  It's only 255 czk and takes about 2 hours.

The only issue is it looks like there is 2 connections and from how I'm reading it, there is very little time to get off the train and on to the next one.  Am I reading that right?  Seems 2 minutes to change trains is way to short.

Here's the link to the literary I am looking at:

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Cieszyn to Oświęcim
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:26:33 pm »
Ok looking at the train rozklad-pkp.pl for 25.5.2011, I am only seeing a few trains leaving from Cieszyn Marklowice to Oświęcim:

8:04 (with a connection in Czechowice Dziedzice),
12:08 (with a connection in Czechowice Dziedzice) and
14:25 (Direct)

You had mentioned the bus is another option and the PKS station is right close to the train station in Cieszyn.  I can only find the Polish language website for the PKS in Cieszyn so I can't really understand what the bus times are to get to Oświęcim.

Just trying to figure out better options then just those 3 trains

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: Vienna to Warsaw Question

Ok thanks.  Turns out I won't be able to do this afterall, if I miss my last leg of my flight to Krakow, they will cancel my return trip.  I'll just stick it out going from Krakow to Warsaw then instead as originally planned.  Thanks though...

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Vienna to Warsaw Question
« on: March 17, 2011, 03:43:16 pm »
Just thinking here of a possibility making things easier on my trip.

I am seeing a train from Wien Meidling  to Warszawa Centralna leaving at 22:23 on 19.05.11 for 75EU (2nd Class) and 115EU (1st Class).

Is this pricing correct on the OBB website?  Or am I missreading it since I don't have any discounts?

Also, it doesn't seem like this train has a sleeper car at all.  Is this correct?

I'm just trying to see if there was a sleeper car over night between the two cities...

That site link helps and the station is easy to find.  I was also able to find the bus station in Cieszyn as well so I should be all set now.  Thanks again...

86
Ok, I'll attempt to use the bus then if it's not too confusing to find (you said it's right there near the train).  That would make it easier then instead of having to wait for a much longer period for trains.  Just hope I can navigate the train stations and find where to go.  Your description of the Bratislava station helped me a great deal last time...

87
Ok I think I'll just stick to this itenary then.

Krakow to Warsaw (Fri morning)
Warsaw to Cieszyn/Cesky Tesin (via Krakow) to Ostrava (Monday morning)
Ostrava to Oswiecim (via Cesky Tesin/Cieszyn) (Wed morning)
Oswiecim to Krakow (Fri morning)

If I take the earliest Monday morning train from Warsaw to Cieszyn, I assume I would have to make a change in Krakow and then get another ticket there to Cieszyn?  Or is there a daytime train straight from Warsaw?  Also approx how long would that train from Warsaw to Ciezyn take (since it's only 40 mins from there to Ostrava)?  Just want to make sure I don't spend the entire day on the train and I can get from Warsaw to Ostrava sometime in the afternoon?

88
Ok I can pick up a Czech phrase book then.

Someone had suggested maybe seeing Olomouc as well.  How are the trains from C. Tesin to there?  I know it looks about 1/2 way to Brno, so not sure if there was a direct train or not or how long it might take...

89
Yeah Ostrava seems to be fairly large.  I was thinking of either doing that or taking the train instead to Košice, but 8 hour train ride there with one change of trains didn't quite seem worth it since Košice is about 1/2 the size of Ostrava.

I think I did write down the times and destinations and information I wanted on my last trip, so I can do this again using both Polish and Czech.

Question then, do both countries know each others language at all?  I know I've heard Slovak and Czech have a hard time understanding each other even when they use the same alphabet.  I have a Polish/English Phrase book and was wondering if people in Ostrava might understand Polish.  Or would it be better for me to get a seperate Czech phrase book instead?  I just don't want to try and learn both languages, so want to focus on just one if I can...

Ok thanks for the info.  In Ostrava, I really don't know much about the town (just wanted to spend 2 nights in the Czech Republic and thought it would probably be the best place.).  So I will have to check on the town a bit more and then find a hotel etc and from there I can figure out better.

So basically the only real thing I will have to do is exit the train in Poland at the border then just cross over the border into C.Tesin and walk to that train station and just buy my next ticket to Ostrava then.

I'm sure that the ticket agents will be less apt to speak in English at all (I found no issues in Vienna or Bratislava last time), but those are more urban stations.

Maybe there is somewhere else close by in the Czech Republic that is maybe better then just going to Ostrava, I'm not familiar with the area at all so I just picked Ostrava being it's a larger city...
