For those traveling by train in Holland it is always worth checking out the local shops for excellent cheap day rail cards. They are usually over €50 but these cards available at stores such as 'Albert Heijn', 'Blokker' and 'Kruidvat' sell then at specific times of the year for €15 thats a cheap ticket for a full days worth of travel on the train. NORMal daytickets cost now over 50 eur, or twice the maximum single fare and are valid all day.
These cheap tickets cost from 12-20 eur, and are never valid in the morning peak (before 9.00) and often also not in the evening peak. You have to be quick to get them, but many are resold for slightly higher price via various forums, best known in NL is marktplaats.nl, go to tickets/kaartjes, then trein/bus.
A fairly complete overview of the current ones is on the site treinreiziger.nl, only in Dutch, but easy to find.
So this system makes it quite hard for a normal tourist to get them-you simply have to be at the right time at the right place and know about them.
