Travel plans, routes and timetables / How best to get from Cluj Napoca to Kosice

I will be travelling around Europe this summer and at some point will be going from Budapest to Brasov and then to Cluj Napoca in Romania. from there I need to get back to Kosice in Slovakia.
It seems that "all lines lead back to Budapest" and from there its straightforward to Kosice.
Is that the best route - or is there another way to cut across country avoiding Budapest which does seem a long way round, though may be the quickest route?
