Checking the OBB site shows one connection to be:
1. Salzburg Hbf (14:08) to Wien Westbanhof (16:30)
What's the date? Since it's a bit weird to start as early as 14:08 when your flight is at 22:30. Line Salzburg-Vienna has very frequent traffic (OeBB Austrian State Railways and WestBahn private company), so you should easily be able to start in between 16-17 and be in Vienna on time

2. walk 166m to Wien Westbanhof U3 (is this easy to navigate?)
3. Wien Westbanhof U3 (16:38) to Erdberg U3 (16:52)
4. Erdberg U3 (16:52) to Erdberg VIB Platform 3 (17:00) (what does this mean? we walk from U3 platform to VIB platform 3?)
5. walk from Erdberg VIB to Flughafen Wien Bus Terminal, 59m. (will be be easy signposting for commuters to follow? what to watch out for here?)
6. Take Bus 6000 to reach VIE in 15 mins time. (how far will the bus terminal be from the International departure hall?)
To be honest, it is way too complicated. Route planners time to time tend to propose such multiple change journeys in order to save like 5 or 10 minutes in total travel time. We find it not worth the hassle, especially for people not well acquainted with Vienna city transport system, much easier will be just to catch train from Salzburg to Wien Westbahnhof and then take direct airport bus from there (bus stop is just in front of the train station), which will take you to airport bus station (located in front of arrivals hall, but it's very easy to get form there to departure) E.g. depart from Salzburg 16:08, arr. to Wien West 18:30 and catch 18:40 bus to the airport (arr. 19:25)

Also remember that in case you departure date is not in the next few days, in advance train ticket purchase can actually save you quite a lot of money on OeBB tickets. Or alternatively, you can just use WestBahn and pay only 24,9 euro (compared to 50+ euro for OeBB full fare standard ticket)

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: Munich to Venice
« on: March 10, 2015, 05:45:14 pm »
We would like to travel late night or mid night so we could stay a night in the train.
Well, there is an everyday overnight train (CNL40463) dep. Munich 23:36 and arriving to Venice 8:24 next morning. However it is not very cheap even if you purchase your tickets well in advance.
And what are the legit site for us to look since there are so many trains sites. We look into these two German/Austrian-run EuroCity trains, but still not sure.
When you aren't sure about which website to use for booking tickets - always go with the official website of the railway company that actually runs the train ;) In this case it will be already mention in the other topic German Railways (DB)

154
I believe for price, we could get quite cheap ticket if we buy it early, am I right?
Usually yes, but in your particular case with trips from Prague to Munich and from Munich to Salzburg you can get a great price even when purchasing tickets before departure, here the type of the ticket what matters (e.g. Bavaria Regional Ticket or Bavaria-Bohemia ticket)
So now, basically what we have in mind are 2 options which:
1. Berlin - Prague - Salzburg - Munich
2. Berlin - Prague - Munich - Salzburg (day trip from munich)
If you could choose, which option you will go with? I think, I prefer the second option, but I am not really sure.
Well, both are possible. With Prague to Munich you just have a bit more options (both direct daytime trains or daytime/overnight buses)

Is this site reliable? Or is this official/legit?
This is an agency-reseller, they have nothing to do with the actual train (or bus) companies. It is better to stick with official rail companies - German Railways (DB) for which we gave a link in the previous post or Czech Railways (CD), it will be more reliable and cheaper for you  ;)
There are 2 options, with bus and train.
For train, I could see its gonna take around 6 hours and from the timetable there, all of them departure at: 5.15, 9.15, 13.15, and 17.15. We dont really like the timing tho, we plan to take this trip overnight.
So the option with bus is much better in our opinion(from the same site) where its gonna take 4 or 6 hours
It seems they have bus at 8.00, 11.15, 14.15, 17.15 and 23.00. So, if we take the bus at 23.00 and arrive in the early morning, we could have a overnight journey. What do you think about this?
You mean Prague-Munich here, right? Again actual bus company which runs 23:00-4:35 bus is this one, besides there are also Eurolines buses

We are wondering, whats the best time to get the train?
What do you mean? Best in terms of cheapest tickets? Best in terms of travel time?

We thought that we could get a evening train from Berlin - Prague, arrive at night in Prague.
Well, EuroCity train depart from Berlin to Prague every two hours during the day, travel time for all of them are 4:30-5 hours. But remember that before the departure the ticket price you'll pay will be rather high (67 euro), so in case you a certain about day and train you want to take - buy your tickets in advance via German Railways (DB) website, that way you can get discounted (savings fare) tickets for as low as 29 euro.
And the next day, we plan to take a night train to Salzburg, is this possible? Since its gonna take 6hours by train.
Unfortunately it's not possible, there are no overnight trains available (the closest to overnight you can get is short overnight Prague to Vienna and next Vienna-Salzburg, but it will be quite a detour), only overnight buses on some days. Perhaps your best option would be to spend the night somewhere near Czech-Austrian border (e.g. Ceske Budejovice or Cesky Krumlov), and then early morning continue to Salzburg, this way you can be in Salzburg before 10am
And then from salzburg at evening, we take train to Munich.
Easiest leg out of all, many trains + you can get so-called Regional (Länder-Ticket), which allows unlimited journeys and covers entire Bavaria as well as Salzburg (for two passengers it will be 28 euro)

What if from Berlin to Prague and then Prague to Munich, then go to Salzburg just for 1 day trip from Munich. Is that even better?
No overnight train from Prague to Munich either (only late evening or early morning), only sort of overnight bus, but it will be just 5 hours and 4am arrival, so hardly it's a great option

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: Moscow-Nice route?

That is copycat website-parasite, basically an agency which tries to sell you tickets with commission, so you definitely shouldn't trust this type of websites. True information is only in express system, and there train #17 is listed via Innsbruck on all the March-April dates

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Tickets on board in Slovenia?
« on: March 02, 2015, 01:31:42 am »
Can you buy the ticket on board the trains from the conductor? If yes, how much is the penalty?
It is possible to purchase train ticket on board, but you will be charged extra 2,5 euro (obviously only if you "board" the train on the station with the working ticket counter)
SZ doesn't sell e-tickets yet, does it?
Well, Slovenian Railways actually launched e-ticket sale, but at the moment it seems to sell only weekly, monthly and yearly passes (so-called abonentske vozovnice) and obviously it's only in Slovenian as of now. Perhaps things will change and with time SZ will be selling all kinds of tickets online, but have no idea when it will happen.

I'm planning to travel in summer by the Istra from Budapest to Koper, but it looks much cheaper to buy the ticket only to Ljubljana and buy a domestic ticket from Ljubljana to Koper.
Well, you should keep in mind that discounted sparschiene tickets (starting from 19 euro) are offered only for 'Citadella' daytime train, so it won't be possible to travel with 'Istria' for as low as 38 euro return. While Ljubljana-Spezial for 49 euro return (which should be ok to use for 'Istria') is just 2.7 euro cheaper than 'standard' ticket, 51.7 or 72.7 euro for Budapest-Koper-Budapest according to MAV.

The problem is I'd like to continue on the same train, but it stops only for few minutes in Ljubljana and no time to buy tickets.
Within Slovenia 'Istria' has a long stop in Maribor, but probably at the time of this stop the ticket counter won't be working

All other train travel questions / Re: Kiev to Bratislava Train
« on: February 22, 2015, 04:01:47 pm »
Does that mean there are 1 passenger compartments, 2 passenger compartments and 3 passenger compartments or do they all hold from 1 to 3 passengers.
All of them can be occupied either by one person (so-called single), two (double) or three (often called "tourist"). Compartment from inside looks like this, during the day or when it's just one or two passengers occupancy middle berth gets folded and becomes kind of backrest for the lower berth

Also, are you quite confident that it won't pose a problem getting the tickets when we arrive there in regards to being sold out. I hadn't realized my friend left and we would be traveling in the latter part of June. Not sure now if it is safe to just do as you suggested or have an agent book it for us, which results in almost double price. I have heard that in summer trains tend to fill quickly. What are your recommendations on this?
You shouldn't worry about Kyiv-Bratislava being sold out, it's like 1 out of 100 chance for this to happen. So just buy these tickets yourself when you arrive to Ukraine, very confident about this ;)

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: Split - Sarajevo
« on: February 14, 2015, 02:24:39 pm »
... though guess there are numerous buses from Stari Grad to Hvar Town as well).
There is even suppose to be bus waiting in Stari Grad ferry terminal for the car ferry arrival, departing to Hvar shortly after everybody gets off.

I have heard the train from Mostar to Sarajevo is really wonderful scenery so I may opt to do that for something fun.
Along with the Bar-Belgrade line it's two of the most scenic routes in Balkans, imho. So in case you ok waking up for the morning train departure, then train should be the preferable option ;)

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: Brussels - Bruges - Amsterdam
« on: February 12, 2015, 08:24:42 pm »
Well, for Brussels to Bruges you don't have much of a choice (in a good sense), because direct InterCity trains run few times per hour during the day, journey from Brussels Central is just less than 70 min (although watch out for the fact that there are also trains to Bruges that go a bit curvy route (not directly via Ghent), those take more 2 hours, so make sure you take the one via Ghent). Belgian InterCity trains are pretty good, so no need to worry about comfort. Money wise best option would be to travel during weekend, that way you can get special Weekend return Ticket
With Brussels to Amsterdam case everything is a bit different, because here you can take either high-speed Thalys train (one-way tickets from 29 euro per passenger if purchased in advance) with 1:50 travel time or use slower InterCity (full fare one-way tickets cost 42 euro) with travel time of 3:10

Travel plans, routes and timetables / Re: Split - Sarajevo
« on: February 12, 2015, 07:59:05 pm »
I hear there is an airport bus to take me into town
It seems like for Split Airport-Split city center there are two options: a) shuttle service, which departs 30 min. after planes land, cost is 30 kuna; b) regular service suburban bus (line Trogir-Split), which stops at the bus stop across the road from the airport. During the day it runs every 20 min., while the ticket fare should be 17 kuna (3 zones ticket)

Not sure if there are others or better ones with better times or not (this one shows only an afternoon departure).
Definitely there are other ferry operators here (e.g. Kapten Luka). Jadrolinija is just biggest and one that operates car ferries. Btw, it seems that they actually have three ferries per day during low-season

What's the best option here?  I know there are a few limited buses, but which seem to be the best?
Never traveled with any of the companies, but doubt there are much of a difference, so suggest just to choose according to dep./arr. time. Split bus station timetable can be found here

I hear there are daily buses, not sure about trains.  What is the best option for going between Mostar to Sarajevo?
I'm bias here  ;D, so I would definitely travel by train (nowadays there are two daily departures 7:06am (arr. 9:48) & 19:12 (arr. 21:53), but train times might be very suitable for many tourist

All other train travel questions / Re: Kiev to Bratislava Train
« on: February 10, 2015, 05:25:48 pm »
The reason I want to be safe in regards to booking is that there are four of us and we want to share the same comparment.
Ok, I see. But you should take into consideration the fact that although it's UZ carriage, but it is still RIC type, so compartments are for 1 to 3 passengers (and not for 4 as it is in Ukrainian domestic trains).
Also since it's 4 passengers traveling together, you should probably tell your friend to ask about so-called CityStar ticket (--> special offer between Ukrainian and Slovak Railways, where second, third etc. passenger actually pays half the price for the ticket part). CityStar ticket is sold as return ticket, but because it will be 50% off for 3 out 4 passenger, buying such return CityStar in your case should turn out to be actually cheaper than purchasing 4 separate one-way tickets

All other train travel questions / Re: Kiev to Bratislava Train
« on: February 10, 2015, 09:43:43 am »
I have a friend in Kiev, I think I might get him to buy the ticket for me to ensure it doesn't get sold out.
Well, as was said earlier, "sold out" is not about Kyiv-Bratislava, there is even some chance that you might be the only passenger in the entire carriage  ;) But in case you want to have your ticket in advance, you friend can purchase it either at the central station in Kyiv (international ticket counters are in the both wings) or at the central railway ticket counters closer to the city center (Shevchenka boulevard 38/40)

164
Whether you can refund your tickets or not depends on the type of ticket. If it's cheapest discounted Sparschiene ticket for 13 euro refund is not allowed and the only thing left is to try to sell it to someone (e.g. maybe find some Hungarian forum and make a post there, because hardly you will be able to find enough people on the international forums who would need to travel on exactly Feb. 16 or, as an alternative, you can simply try selling your tickets in front of the MAV ticket counter at Keleti station like 30 min. before departure, when there definitely gonna be some passengers wanting to travel on the next (=your) train to Vienna. It will be a bold move, but you basically have nothing to lose)
In case you have some different type of tickets, then perhaps refund is allowed by tariff rules, but we can't say unless we know what type of tickets you have

« on: February 09, 2015, 06:41:28 pm »
Does anyone have info on the train number and what train it is, i.e. Ukrainain, Slovakian etc. as well as how to purchase tickets.
Actually it is not really a whole train, but just one single direct through UZ carriage, which departs Kyiv daily with train #99 (Kyiv-Uzghorod) at 15:22, then in Chop (from 6am till 9am next morning) it gets bogie change, border/customs control and reattachment to cross-border train Chop-Cierna nad Tisou. In Cierna once again it gets reattached (now to Cierna-Kosice local train) and continues to Kosice, where final reattachment happens (now to Kosice-Bratislava train). Arrival to Bratislava at 18:05, so it takes almost 28 hours for the entire journey

Carriages are Ukrainian, renovated not that along ago (think they all used to run in Kyiv-Berlin train before it was canceled), so basically it's the best thing Ukrainian Railways (UZ) have. Here the photo of Kyiv-Bratislava carriage taken just a few weeks ago

Ticket... well it's a bit tricky. Ukrainian Railways doesn't sell tickets for this type of international connections online, so the only way to buy it is at the station. However it's not that big of a problem, since these carriages to Slovakia pretty much always empty (partly due to the fact that it's expensive to travel the whole route with international ticket), so the situation when it's sold out is basically impossible.
Ticket fare for Kyiv to Bratislava depends on some additional factors (whether you travel one-way or return and whether it's just one passenger or more), but as a rough estimate for one-way one passenger ticket+sleeper reservation we speaking about sum around 85 euro (although when bought in Ukraine in UAH any time soon it can turn out to be even cheaper). But in case you want to save money you can travel using domestic trains this carriage gets attached to (--> getting off & boarding next one) for the total fare more than twice cheaper
