Hello everyone!  I tried looking up the fare for this trip, but can only really find the prices from RailEurope (which I'm guessing is very inflated).

I'm looking for a way to get from Split to Zurich and wondering if the train will be a more cost/time efficient way versus the plane.

I really appreciate your help, thanks!

In terms of cheapest way to travel by rail will be to purchase domestic Croatian ticket Split-Zagreb (from 170 HRK) and then catch discounted Spar tickets Zagreb-Zurich for the direct overnight train 18:14-9:20 (tickets start from 29 EUR). As result you can manage the whole route with one change and app. 50 EUR. But the problem here is that discounted tickets Zagreb-Zurich aren't sold online, thus you will need to buy this in Croatia (in Split cashier should be able to sell it) and buy it in advance, since ticket sold under such price is limited in number.
Online you can purchase discounted ticket for this train only from Austrian Villach (https://ticket.oebb.at/bin/frame_ticket.pl?ticket=jticket.pl&LANG=EN), but then you will need to spend another 30+ EUR for full fare ticket Zagreb-Villach.

Just in case, since due to limited number of tickets the discounted fare for Zagreb-Zurich isn't guaranteed, it is also good to know that the full fare for ticket Zagreb-Zurich is around 115 EUR.

Also, if you are ok partly substituting train for other mean of transport and avoiding Zagreb, then there is totally different options available as well. You can travel Split-Rijeka by bus or ferry, afterward there are two choices:
a) from Rijeka continue by train to Ljubljana where you can catch the same overnight train #414 to Zurich (dep.20:49). Full fare is 98.6 EUR, but also same SparSchiene tickets are available (seats from 29 EUR, couchette from 39 EUR, 3 bed sleeper - 59 EUR)
b) from Rijeka continue by bus to Italy (Trieste) - http://www.saf.ud.it/cms/data/pages/files/000057_resource1_orig.pdf. From there you can easily catch daytime trains to Zurich (usually with a change in Milan taking app. 8-9 hours in total). TrenItalia website also offers discounted tickets for certain connections and those can be bought online (www.trenitalia.com , need to choose tariff "Smart")
