Hello, I don't know if anyone has posted re this, but in Hungary, if you carry a EU passport and are over 65 you can travel for free on 2nd class trains and free on buses and trams (streetcars).  All you need to do is show your passport to the official on the gate.  If you wish to travel 1st class then you can upgrade for a very silly amount!   I go from Pécs to Eger via Budapest for the princely sum of circa £7 return, 1st class to Budapest and back, 2nd class Budapest to Eger, which is totally free.  The only time you won't get free travel in Hungary is on things like the Children's Railway and the various rack and pinion railways.

Indeed, in many countries of the region senior citizens from EU get either free travel or essential discount when using trains, though actual age limit varies (guess it depends on pension age in that particular country)

You're welcome!  I only found out when  I was first here and I went to buy a ticket.  The seller asked my age and then told me I was entitled to freebies!!   However, the advice came with a warning - make sure you have your passport/ausweis to prove your age/EU  membership or you will get heavily fined.  Now I have permanent residency status I just show that.

Well, you are right that in many countries you need some type of "senior" card in addition, but there are still quite a few countries where discount is given without any, first few coming in mind are Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, probably some other too

Yep, it would be great if you can share it. We don't deal a lot with Senior discounts, so it would be a good thing to have some kind of overview
