I will be travelling from avignon to paris in september and want to travel by TGV. Should I buy our tickets BEFORE we leave the US or wait until we arrive in France? We will be in Provence for 8 days before going to Paris. If I should buy here, how do I go about doing that? Our other option is to get a eurail pass, but i'm not sure that is economical. We will travel by train for approximately 7 days (mostly between small towns in provence - arles to avignon, cassis to avignon, avignon to isle sur la sorgue, etc). Would greatly appreciate any advice!

Eurail pass in your case is a rip off, so forget about it. Regular train fares for connections between such closely located destinations like Arles to Avignon or Avignon to L'isle sur-la-Sorgue cost rather cheap and can be bought without any problems right before departure.
In case of Avignon-Paris it is better to buy your ticket as early in advance as possible --> increases your chances to get discounted ticket.
Unfortunately official website tgv-europe.com/en redirects all US customers to Eurail website, this isn't great news for you since Eurail website (as agency) sells more expensive tickets. So it is better to choose not USA in "Your country", but Great Britain or any other European country, this will save you a lot of money (check out the same date with different nationalities and you will see the difference). This small trick with nationality will not affect your travels, because nobody checks it on the train.
