That would save me some money at least.  And I assume I don't even need to leave the train, just show the Bayern pass at Kaufbeuren when asked by the conductor assuming the train doesn't leave there before 9am correct?    Trains I also assume will never leave early either, meaning I won't get caught leaving Kaufbeuren and it's not quite 9am?
No need to leave the train whatsoever, because till Kaufbeuren you will have a valid ticket, while dep. from Kaufbeuren is officially at 9:00am, so Bavaria Ticket will kick in exactly at the time of departure from the station.
Maybe before the actual journey just make sure that for the day you intend to travel on there are no changes in schedule or something like that

Oh another question about the German trains, is one allowed to bring a bottle of wine to just drink in 2nd class?  I have heard this is not a problem, but every nation I think is different and would like to just make sure I am allowed to do this heading back from Füssen to Munich?
Never tried it, but according to wikipedia it is allowed  ;)

Now I looked on Bahn's site and was curious about trains that left before 9am (so I could get down there earlier) and it seems there are some and that I can get a Bayern-Ticket (return Journey) for 48.50€.  So I am confused about this since I thought the Bayern is only good after 9am.
Yes, Bavaria Ticket is valid only from 9am on weekdays and you can't change that. What DB website shows you for 48,5 euro is basically a combination of full fare ticket (25,5 euro) Munich-Fussen for your outward trip starting before 9am and actual Bavaria-Ticket for 23 euro for your return leg, so 25,5+23=48,5

I'm just trying to see what the cost would be if I left on a earlier train before 9am.
Well, earliest direct train to Fussen leaves at 7:53am, so basically you don't need to pay full fare for the entire trip here, but just full fare ticket till the station this direct train passes at 9am (roughly half way between Munich and Fussen). While for the rest of the outward journey and for the entire return trip you can just get 23 euro Bavaria Ticket.
In practice such trick would look like this - in Munich you buy Bavaria Ticket + standard ticket Munich-Kaufbeuren (from this station earliest direct train Munich-Fussen departs exactly at 9am) for 17,4 euro, thus in total costs would be 23+17,4=40,4 euro. Then board the 7:53 train and until Kaufbeuren you show conductor you full fare standard ticket, while after your Bavaria-Ticket

Otherwise, choice whether to pay 40,4 euro and have an extra hour or pay just 23 euro is totally yours

In such situations more reliable is 'local' website, thus rozklad-pkp.pl. It accounts all the changes in the schedule, potential construction works etc., while DB website is good, but PKP won't notify them all the time about any minor changes on all the lines and/or Germans won't make changes that quickly and promptly.
For instance, in your case it seems that DB shows schedule as of today (if you check rozklad like for next Wednesday it will show you the same picture) no matter which date you pick, however rozklad for dates after 28/04 shows different schedule not (yet?) reflected in DB's hafas

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Online ticket + reservation with CD Shop
« on: April 14, 2014, 04:53:08 pm »
Sorry for refreshing the old topic
It's ok, always good to come back to the old topics and actually update them or answer new questions ;)

For any travel date with Praha-Budapest EN 477 the system says there are no seats available. Beds and couchettes work. High price for seats from Praha Holesovice (but not Praha Hl Nad) as well. Can you confirm/give me a solution?
Problem here is that seating carriage Prague Hl.n - Budapest this year runs with "Metropol" only from June 13 to September 13, so at the moment the only seating carriages in the train are Berlin-Budapest ones --> means only 29 euro (app. 810 CZK) tickets are sold. That is the reason why CD eShop shows "no seats" no matter which date you enter (for dates after mid June however it shouldn't be a problem to get 19 euro tickets once the sale opens)
Why system doesn't show 29 euro seats (Berlin-Budapest carriages) from Praha hl.n... well, it's already a different nuance. Apparently Czechs just had trouble/didn't want to insert two groups of carriages (Praha hl.n.-Bud. & Berlin-Bud.) from the main station, so decided to sell tickets for the later only from Holesovice

215
BTW, what's that 12 euro ticket you've shown? I thought the special was for 15 euro single, and this was the cheapest.
It is not the ticket, it's T3 (2/3) sleeper reservation cost - carriage #425, berth #21. Ticket price listed at the top and it is indeed 15 euro (standard 'Belgrade Special')

Any further inputs would be welcome!
Well, there is nothing much to add. Maybe just that timetables for all the journeys you can find via links to official railways website provided in the previous post. Otherwise we just suggest you to take your time, look through all the legs of your journey... and in case you have further questions just post them here  ;)

Rail pass for Central and South-Eastern Europe rarely makes sense, since traditionally ticket fares in almost all the countries of the region aren't very high, but let's look in details:

Prague to Poprad: daytime EuroCity or couple overnight train options, tickets for EC trains (seats, daytime) start from only 20 euro, for the overnighters cheapest couchettes are 27 euro, sleepers - 32 euro. However all of the above are discounted tickets offered in limited number per departure, thus purchase in advance is required in case you don't want to overpay. Place to buy it - Czech Railways (CD) ticket eShop. In case you don't want or can't buy your tickets in advance, then full standard fare for route Prague-Poprad-Tatry when purchased in Czech Republic is 39,9 euro

Poprad to Bratislava: easy and relatively cheap. Trains go like every hour during the day, standard full fare when purchased online via Slovak Railways (ZSSK) website is 14,17 euro. At the ticket counter it will be a bit more expensive, since online purchase gives additional 5% discount. Also you can take a bus, but it will take an hour or even two longer compared to the journey by train

Bratislava to Budapest: again easy and nonproblematic. During the day trains run every two hours, full price is 17,5 euro no matter when you buy your ticket as far as it is done in Slovakia (or Hungary). Also possible to travel cheaper via Sturov/Esztergom (good town to spend couple hours), but it will extend your total travel time

Budapest to Bucharest: here you have a choice of either daytime train or one of the two overnighters, in both cases journey is quite long (14-16 hours). Hungarian Railways sell discounted tickets for all three direct trains - seats start from 29 euro, couchettes from 39 or sleepers from 59 euro. But again discounted tickets require in advance purchase, since they are limited per departure and can get sold out. We have a step by step guide on how to purchase tickets via Hungarian Railways (MAV) website - http://europetrainsguide.com/Advice/How-to-Buy-Train-Tickets/Hungary-MAV.html

Bucharest to Sofia: here things get a bit more complicated, since train tickets (roughly 25 euro for one-way ticket) can't be purchased online + quality of carriages might be not that good. However you still have daytime or overnight option for the trip

Sofia to Thessaloniki: Greece canceled all the international trains, so at the moment rail option isn't really available, but there are plenty of direct buses from Sofia to Thessaloniki (some of them actually run by Greek Railways company). One-way bus ticket (depending on departure) cost 40-50 BGN (app. 20-25 euro)

Thus, as you can see yourself, it is not very difficult to cover the whole itinerary in less than 100 euro in total...doubt that any pass would beat this price.

When printed i noticed that the ticket Ventimiglia-Milano IC and the ticket Milano-Basel EC are linked with CardHolders' name (bought with my BF card), whereas  tickets Rome-Genua-Ventimiglia are OK. what can I do? I already messaged trenitalia with all PNR and CP numbers of tickets, and asked him to help me resolve problem
Well, don't worry that much, because in Italy conductors usually don't check names at all, at least we never heard about any problems in regards to the situation with names. Otherwise you did the right thing while emailing TrenItalia directly.
Swiss conductors also won't care after their Italian colleagues stamp your ticket. But even if somebody will ask (however we really doubt that), than just try to explain what happened and that is it

219
you mean EasyJet or it is the other site  -- EasyJet/Swiss, for catch plane
It is two different companies - EasyJet is low-cost airline, while Swiss Airlines is flag carrier. Both operate on route Nice to Geneva, so it just makes sense to compare the two and see which one is cheaper

I've found economy Milano-Basel train, on trenitalia.com  is extraprice for 32 E and on raileurope.com for 48 $
raileurope is a reseller website, basically an agency that sells train tickets with extra commission, thus we strongly DO NOT recommend to use their services. TrenItalia website is more reliable and definitely safer place to buy your ticket

Rome-Monte Carlo at 18.04 by train
For passengers traveling from Italy to Côte d'Azur main keyword to remember is Ventimiglia, it is last Italian border station before France. If you visit TrenItalia website now, then you can get train tickets Rome-Ventimiglia for 18.04 roughly for 50-70 euro (depending on connection, InterCity trains are bit cheaper, but Frecciabianca trains are faster), the whole route with potential change in Genova would take 7-8 hours (also possible to travel overnight). While from Ventimiglia there are frequent daytime trains to Nice (ticket is 8 euro no matter when you buy it), journey take less than an hour

the best fare from NICE to BASEl  by train, or maybe one leg  this route w/a?  for example, NICE-GENEVA w/a, or X (any city in Suisse) - BASEL w/a
Well, exact answer depends on date. You want to travel on the 19th or early morning 20th? But probably most convenient choice would be to catch EasyJet/Swiss airplane from Nice to Geneva (for 19 and 20.04 prices are in 60 euro range). While from Geneva get a nice train ride for 2:30-2:45 and 36,6 CHF (SuperSaver discounted tickets available via Swiss Railways website). Going just by train all the way seems to be quite expensive for your dates, since the only direct TGV train from Nice to Geneva cost around 100 euro + you'll need a ticket from Monte Carlo to Nice and again Geneva to Basel. However in case you ok going Monte Carlo-Basel via Italy, then for 20.04 morning there is 32 euro discounted train tickets from Milan to Basel, which menas that you can travel Monte Carlo-Ventimiglia-Milan (domestic discounted tickets Ventimiglia-Milan start from only 9 euro) on the 19th, spend the night in Milan and board the morning train Milan-Basel

...but the 'real' compositions on vagonweb.cz are showing that it has run without a sleeper or a couchette.
Well, "real" composition dates Thu 6.2. / Fri 7.2.2014, it was quite long time ago. Maybe then there was some reason why carriages were missing, but as of now MAV website easily allows to purchase ticket+reservation  sleeper/couchette

So in this case we would recommend to trust official MAV website, hardly they would sell reservation so easily while knowing that there is no carriage(s) running

Is it possible to buy a 1st class special ticket for this train?
Since there is no "Belgrade Spezial" for 1st class, it's not sold online. But at the station it won't be a problem to buy such ticket (fare should be 42,7 € one-way or 48,8 € return)

itinerary 3   http://postimg.org/image/p8vmh1223/
Budapest-Zagreb: daytime trains twice a day (morning/evening), roughly 7 hours travel time and 29 euro (doesn't matter when to buy you ticket as far as you do it in Hungary)
Zagreb-Sarajevo: daytime train, roughly 9 hours, about 30 euro (only when you buy in Croatia/BiH)
Sarajevo-Montenegro: no decent train option, so just bus here
Montenegro-Albania: same here, no passenger trains between two countries
Montenegro-Belgrade: daytime & overnight trains (quite busy during summer), marvelous scenery (thus recommend to travel during the day), roughly 11 hours, tickets from roughly 20 euro (only when you buy in MNT/Serbia)
Belgrade-Budapest: daytime & overnight trains, roughly 8 hours, tickets from 15 euro (only when you buy in Hungary/Serbia)

itinerary 4  http://postimg.org/image/4d9c5s5uz/
Szeged-Belgrade: no direct service, but with two relatively easy changes it is possible to get to Belgrade by rail only
Belgrade-Sarajevo: no direct rail service
--//--
Albania-Kosovo: no direct rail service
Pristina-Skopje: once a day direct train, roughly 2:30 hours, tickets (separate for Kosovo & Macedonia legs) in total would be around 5 euro or so
Skopje-Sofia: no direct rail service, but plenty of buses
Sofia-Timisoara: no direct train, but you can try going via Bucharest (or, alternatively with many changes & buses via Vidin/Craiova)
Timisoara-Szeged: no direct train, but with one change (in Bekescsaba) it's about 5 hours journey by rail (NB direct Timisoara-Budapest trains available)

Train fares and tariffs / Re: Tickets Train Budapest- Moscow
« on: March 22, 2014, 11:31:26 am »
I heard maybe it should be possible to buy just the reservation from DB and the ticket in Budapest at the station?
Yes, it will be a smart choice, since the price of the reservation is the same either you buy it via DB terminal or at MAV ticket counter in Hungary. While ticket prices are different, because in Germany (or elsewhere besides Hungary/Russia) special MAV-RZD discounts aren't applied.
As of now 2/3 reservation Budapest-Moscow costs 32 euro, 2nd class ticket Budapest-Moscow (when bought in Hungary) is only 117,8 euro

Trying to understand train schedules between Belgrade and Bar, Montenegro - are there any websites in English ?
Sure, passengers can use either Serbian Railways website timetable page or Montenegro Railways schedule. In case you plan to travel during the summer, then also additional trains will be available

Ideally interested in going from Belgrade to Bar and then to Sarajevo and then back to Belgrade - possible by train ?
Well, traveling by train from Montenegro to Sarajevo isn't really an option, since there is no rail line, however there are plenty of direct buses (daytime and overnight). It seems that during summer (high-season) there is even a direct one from Ulcinj-Bar-Sarajevo, but nowadays (low-season) there are buses only from Podgorica and western part of Montenegro (Herceg-Novi).
Taking a train between Sarajevo and Belgrade is also quite problematic, direct one was canceled some time ago and probably won't be reintroduced any time soon, while traveling with change via Zagreb isn't really a great option. So it's either multiple changes of bus+train or direct bus Sarajevo-Belgrade

Let's take a look at each leg separately:

Paris to Nice: here you can catch one of the multiple direct high-speed trains, discounted tickets for the whole route start from only 20 euro per passenger (although obviously it's non-refundable & non-exchangeable type of tickets, so you should take into consideration the conditions of sale for such tickets). High-speed TGV trains go via fastest route (Lyon-Avignon-Marseille), exact stops on the way depend on departure.
Main thing to remember is to use only official French Railways website (for both schedule & ticket purchase), that way you can be sure that you are not overpaying some reseller or agency

French Riviera: unless you plan to travel long way (like <100km at a time) your best, and pretty much the only, option is standard tickets for regional trains, can purchase them any time via ticket machines at the station. Also sometimes at Côte d'Azur local buses are good and cheap travel option

Nice to Barcelona: at the moment there is no direct rail connection (either daytime or overnight), so you'll have to make changes in case you want to travel by train. There is early morning direct TGV from Marseille to Barcelona + couple from Paris to Barcelona (can be caught for instance in Montpellier). As of now discounted tickets for direct TGV Marseille-Barcelona seems to start from 49 euro (again in case you purchase via French Railways website), with Nice to Montpellier +  Montpellier to Barcelona it will probably be more expensive (depends on particular connection on particular date + situation during high-season (summer) might change).

In case you want to make additional stops on your way, then obviously it will make you itinerary more expensive. Again here a lot will depend on exact places you want to visit, dates of your journeys and whether you up to purchasing your tickets in advance. Regarding passes, it is an option, however in France all the long-distance and high-speed trains require seat reservation, so just having a pass is no enough, plus on some trains there is quota of pass holders seats, meaning that at certain peak departures you might not be able to take a train you want just because all the quota set got sold out.
