Hi,
We will  be doing this trip in May.  Departing from Mestre (because our hotel this there).  Looking on the ticket site IC585 depts Mestre but arrives in Firenze Rifredi where is this station.  We were looking at this train because we are not in a hurry and
was half the fare (mini 1st class).
Also when booking the tickets is there any way to determine or request an exact seat eg facing the way the train is travelling.  There will be two of us so will they automatically allocate an alise and window.

The thing is that "main" Florence station (SMN) is the dead-end station, while "Firenze Rifredi" is the previous one before SMN, it allows to stop in Florence, but at the same time not to lose time for the change of directions as with SMN.
Basically it's only 3km away from SMN, you can see the exact location here. To get from Rifredi to the centre you can eaither use city transport or simply board next local train which goes to SMN (for instance next ones depart Rifredi at 12:27, then 12:44, journey takes only 5 min.)

Smart choice, the tickets itself almost twice cheaper then the ones for EuroStar, but at the same time it is slower only for about an hour, not a crucial shortcoming in this case

Well, that is a bit tricky, since there is no definite answer which type of carriage you'll have, it might be either compartments or open airplane-type salon, plus numbering might differ even in the same type carriages.

Is it possible that even 1st class onthe IC train is a compartment.  We difinately do not want to travel that way.  As we are staying in via Borgo Allegri and travelling with bags we will have to weigh up the "difficult" options.
If we decide to book the 9419 Frecciargento is it possible to pick exact seats on this train?  We wlould then only train 2nd class but the info around advises not much diffenert for 1st class.

Yep, it is possible. TrenItalia has type "Gran Comforto" (1st class) carriages both compartment (something like this) and as open coach (like this). Unfortunately we couldn't find exact schema of IC 585, but if to rely on a few rather recent videos of the IC 585 train, then 1st class there looks like open coach.

I have booked our seats and got the Mini fare but not sure if the seats are together.  Is there any way to ctc them and get seats together.

What makes you think they are not together?

Just in case, here is the abstract from the rules (you should have seen it when booking): "All MINI tickets, including tickets purchased online and with ticketless option, can be changed solely at ticket desks at train stations or at the travel agency where the ticket was issued up to midnight of the day before departure. Changes can be made only once. You are only allowed to change the departure date or time for the same category of train or service, subject to a change fee (equal to the difference to the corresponding full base price).". But anyway don't think it's that big of a problem since you can always ask other passengers to switch, plus train might not be full and you will have a chance to chose whatever seats you like etc.
