Rail passes – to buy or not to buy?

Should I buy a Eurail pass? Or perhaps my travel itinerary will work better with a different kind of rail pass (InterRail pass, Swiss pass, French rail pass, Balkan Flexi pass, etc.) from a variety of train passes offered for traveling by train in European countries? Is there a chance to purchase a set of point-to-point train tickets, which at the end might turn out to be cheaper than the rail pass' price? Is Eurail pass actually makes sense and worth it? How cheap point-to-point rail tickets can be? Every day questions like this are being asked by many potential travelers planning their rail vacations or just a few train trips in Europe. Often it can be a really difficult choice to make, but the right decision might actually save you a fortune on your rail journeys in Europe. That is the reason why it makes sense to spend a bit of extra time and take into consideration all the pros & cons of train passes. Why not to buy a train pass:

  • Majority of rail passes (especially Eurail pass, no matter whether it's a global version or a country/region specific version of the pass) are expensive. One of the main reasons for that is the fact that both Eurail and Interrail passes are created & sold by agencies, they are not really products of the rail companies operating actual trains in Europe. These agencies simply agree with as many European railway companies as they can about specific conditions of how, when, where, etc. their train passes can be used. Did you ever wonder why pass rules & conditions differ in different European countries? Difference in agreement terms between agency issuing your rail pass and company operating the actual train you take is the reason why train pass holders in some countries don't pay additional fees/supplements, while in other cases they do pay those annoying extra fees. When you think about buying train pass you should always keep in mind that neither agencies offering you this pass, nor railway companies accepting the pass, function at a loss while selling & allowing use of train passes, thus in many instances rail pass is definitely not a reasonable way to save money when you travel by train in Europe.
  • Behind the biggest advantage of any rail pass (--> unlimited train trips during certain period of validity) hides major disadvantage - high extra fees/supplements as well as rather pricey seat reservations. Basically, those things are nothing else than hidden extra charges, which come in addition to already expensive train pass fare. It might be difficult to believe it, but sometimes money passenger pays as extra fees and seat reservations can add up to be more than a point-to-point ticket price for the very same route & train. Most obvious example here is the high-speed EuroStar trains which connect London with Paris & Brussels. Pass holders fee for London to Paris journey is 118 euro (2nd class), while cheapest point-to-point tickets for the same connection cost more than twice cheaper. Do you still want a train pass? Similar things happen with many other high-speed trains (e.g. Thalys) or fancy overnight trains (e.g. Trenhotel)
  • Yet another big issue with the train passes concerns validity period, especially with the so-called 'continuous' train passes and rail passes valid only couple days. When buying these kinds of passes it is important to understand one simple matter - it will be very difficult to use your rail pass rationally, because what really happens when you travel? You spend half or even more time of your pass validity period on sightseeing, sleeping at hotels and other non-travel related activities. As result, daily pass value (price of your pass divided on number of days this pass is valid) might be even higher than standard full-flex train ticket price for those few journeys that you plan to take during your trip. Plus there is also discounted promo offer tickets (--> cheap rail fare), which can easily beat your pass daily value almost always.
  • "Travelling with a rail pass? Sorry, no seat for you" issue. In countries like France there is a special quota for the number of passengers with a rail pass per each train departure. Therefore you, as a pass holder, might experience problems with buying seat reservation simply because there are no seats for rail pass holders left for the train you want. But what if you need to travel urgently by this specific train? Then the only thing left will be to buy standard full fare ticket (=costs a fortune, because it will be purchased right before departure). Do you really want to end up in situation like that?

Why to buy a train pass:

  • First of all, rail pass offers you an unlimited number of train trips & as many stopovers as you want. Therefore pass might be perfect solution for those who are not sure about details of their travel itinerary (=simply like to be spontaneous), plan to travel a lot (like really, really a lot), travel internationally or make multiple long distance journeys.
  • Train pass might give you a good value in those European countries where traveling by train is rather expensive to begin with, but at the same time most of the trains in that particular country doesn't require any additional supplements or seat reservations for the pass holders, thus in instances when there is no hidden extra costs involved. Probably best example of the country like this is Germany.
  • Rather often rail pass can give you some additional discounts on certain non-rail related activities (e.g. tickets for ferries, city or museum tours, etc.). However, you should always keep in mind that such discounts usually aren't very essential, so there is definitely no sense to purchase rail pass just in order to receive certain additional discounts, see it more as a minor bonus that goes along with you rail travel pass.

On some minor private railways pass holders are entitled only to 50% discount (e.g. Interrail Youth Passs on Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn), others like Jungfraujoch Bahn do not participate in the agrement at all, so make sure you check with the private railway website before planning your rail trip.
