National Train Service:

Train types in Serbia: Urban/Suburban (BG Voz), Passenger (Putnički), Regional (Regionalni), Express (Brzi), InterCity & InterCity Srbija trains

• Urban / Suburban (marked as 'BG voz' on ZS website): rail service around Belgrade area (from Pančevački Most to Batajnica via Beograd Centar, Novi Beograd, Tosin Bunar & Zemun), no seat reservation required
  
• Passenger or Putnički (marked as 'PT' on ZS website): common passenger trains serving on routes all over Serbia, no seat reservation required
  
  
• Express or Brzi (marked as 'B' on ZS website): fast trains connecting major Serbian cities & towns, no seat reservation required, but special tariff supplement applies (100 RSD for one-way tickets or 160 RSD for return tickets) compared to ordinary passenger trains. Certain international trains within Serbia (e.g. Belgrade to Sofia, Belgrade to Skopje, etc.) are also marked as Express trains
  
• Regional (marked as 'RE' on ZS website): regional service connecting major Serbian cities & towns (in terms of tarification it is similar to Express trains), no seat reservation required.
• InterCity (marked as 'IC' on ZS website): intercity service on major Serbian lines (e.g. Belgrade to Novi Sad & Subotica), seat reservation mandatory (110 RSD) + special tariff supplement applies (200 RSD for one-way tickets or 320 RSD for return tickets). Some international trains (e.g. daytime Belgrade to Budapest) within Serbia also marked as InterCity
• InterCity Srbija (marked as 'ICS' on ZS website): premium intercity service (Belgrade-Požega-Kraljevo & Belgrade-Novi Sad-Subotica) with new Stadler Flirt trainsets, global price based tariff is used
  

Validity of Trains Tickets in Serbia: domestic one-way tickets are valid for one day, while return tickets valid either during one day (for journeys <100 km) or one 15 days (journeys >101 km)

Discounts, special offers & ways to save money for passengers traveling by train in Serbia (ZS):

1. Passengers purchasing return tickets receive 20% discount (both 1^st and 2^nd class)
2. Passengers planning to visit more than one destination in Serbia (e.g. day trip with couple destinations) can take advantage of the fact that Serbian Railways allow one stopover for any domestic journey done with one way ticket or two stopovers with any return ticket (one stopover during outward & one during return trip). What does it mean? It means that passenger who has ticket from destination A to destination C can travel from A to C with a stopover in destination B, thus instead of two separate tickets purchase one through ticket, which, due to regressive nature of the Serbian rail tariff, will be cheaper than combination of two separate tickets. For instance, such totally legit 'trick' will work perfectly for somebody planning to visit Novi Sad & Subotica while starting there journey in Belgrade.
3. Passengers planning multiple journeys around Serbia can also take advantage of ZS domestic Flexi Pass (Srbija Fleksipas), which is valid for 10 travel days within one month validity period on any ZS train (including InterCity, however seat reservation for IC trains needs to be purchased separately for each journey) in 2^nd class: passengers 26+ years pay 3500 RSD, passengers <26 - 2000 RSD, passengers >60 years old - 2500 RSD 
   
   
4. Passengers planning multiple journeys within Serbia can also keep in mind possibility to use Balkan Flexi Pass (more about it below in the International section)
   

 

International Train Service:

a) Regular discounts

• 60% off SCIC-NRT tariff for any return ticket from Serbia to Hungary (or 30% for one-way tickets)
• 30% off SCIC-NRT tariff for any ticket from Serbia to Croatia
• 20% off SCIC-NRT tariff for any return ticket from Serbia to Slovenia
  
• 20% off SCIC-NRT tariff for any return ticket from Serbia to FYR Macedonia
  
•  SET tariff (valid for rail journeys between the members of South-East Europe Railways Group (SERG), which are the railway companies of Albania, Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro & Republika Srpska (ZRS)

Passengers can also take advantage of special Multilateral Agreement between a number of Central European railway companies. It allows to get 30% (or 40% for youth<26 years old and 50% for groups more than 6 passengers) discount from regular SCIC-NRT tariff fare on any return ticket purchased for connections between countries participants of the tariff Agreement (Czech Republic (CD), Hungary (MAV), Romania (CFR), Poland (PKP), Slovakia (ZSSK), Bulgaria (BDZ), Serbia (ZS) and FYR Macedonia (MZ)

Though at the same time potential passengers need to be careful and also consider possible bilateral agreements between Servian Railways (ZS) and rail companies in other countries (those might be cheaper at the end). In case of Serbia it's cheaper to purchase tickets to Bulgaria, FYR Macedonia and Romania with a help of other discounts (SET tariff) and bilateral agreement/special offer with Hungary

b) Special offers (SparSchiene)

Ticket offers with limited number of tickets per each departure (purchase in advance required):

• SparSchiene Austrija: one-way tickets from Belgrade to Vienna (train # 344/345) as low as 39 euro (seats)
• Ljubljana Specijal: one-way tickets from Belgrade to Ljubljana as low as 25 euro (seats) or 33 euro (6 berth couchette) 
• SparSchiene Hrvatska: one-way tickets from Belgrade to Zagreb as low as 19 euro (seats) or 29 euro (6 berth couchette)
• Bar Specijal (offer is valid only from Sept.1 to May 31): one-way tickets from Belgrade to Bar & from Bar to Belgrade for 9,90 euro (seats), 14,90 euro (6 berth couchettes) or 24,90 euro (3 bed sleepers)

Ticket offers with unlimited number of tickets per each departure :

• Munich Specijal: return ticket from Belgrade to Munich for 161,40 euro (via Sid & Croatia) or 151,40 euro (via Subotica & Hungary)
  
• Wien Special: return ticket from Belgrade to Vienna (via Hungary): 70 euro in 2^nd class or 105 euro in 1^st class
  
• Bucuresti Special: return ticket from Belgrade to Bucharest (48 euro) (direct train service is suspended, however there is still chance to travel to Bucharest with change in Vršac & Timisoara)
  
• Budapest Special: one-way (15 euro) or return (26 euro) ticket from Belgrade to Budapest (daytime & overnight trains)
• Bačka Special: Novi Sad/Vrbas/Bačka Topola/Sombor to Budapest: one-way 12 euro or return for 20 euro
•  Macedonia Special: return ticket from Belgrade to Skopje (32,60 euro) or return from Niš to Skopje (15,70 euro)
  
• Banat Special: 14 euro return tickets from Belgrade to Timisoara (change in Vršac required)
• Timisoara Special: 4 euro (one-way) or 8 euro (return) ticket from Vršac to Timisoara
• Beograd-Solun: one-way ticket from Belgrade to Thessalonki for 33,80 euro or return for 54 euro
  

• Sarajevo Special: one way ticket from Belgrade to Sarajevo (16,8 euro) or return (31 euro) (service suspended)
• Doboj Special: one way ticket from Belgrade to Doboj (11,3 euro) or return (21 euro) (service suspended)

c) CityStars
