Train travel in Albania: train schedules, fares & other useful info

National (Domestic) Train Service:

Albanian Railways (HSh) at the moment do not offer a big variety of different train types, thus passengers traveling by train in Albania can basically meet just one type of train - ordinary "trenit" without any obligatory seat reservation. Due to a number of reasons, rail network & passenger rail service in Albania is quite limited and seems to "deteriorate" each year. As result Albanian passenger train service is "alive" only on some major lines & routes (with trains to/from Durres, Shkoder, Elbasan, etc.), however taking a train in Albania is very cheap (HSh ticket fares are very low and inexpensive compared to any other European country) and in many instances quite scenic, so, in case you are not in hurry, taking a train in Albania might be a good and interesting travel experience.

Since it is not an easy task to find an Albanian train schedules we publish below current Albanian Railway (HSh) timetables (timetable is from 2017, but it seems to be valid for 2018 as well):

NB: Since the late 2013 Tirana train station was closed for any passenger and freight transport, it was demolished to make room for a new boulevard that will lead over the station area to the north of the city. In the northwestern district of Tirana - Laprake - a new station will be built, which is planned as a multi-functional terminal for railway, tram and bus. Until then railway transport on the leg between Tirana and Kashar remains closed, but Kashar station is basically located in the north-western outskirts of Tirana (7 km to Tirana city center), thus these days Albanian trains terminate there and a special bus to Kashar station is introduced

International Train Service:

There is no international passenger trains originating or transiting Albanian territory (although Albania is connected by rail line with Montenegro, while lines to Kosovo & FYR Macedonia are being projected)

How to Purchase Train Tickets in Albania:

At the moment it is not possible to purchase Albanian train tickets online via HSh (or any other) website website, so potential passengers will have to rely on ticket purchase already on the spot, but it's not a big problem, since Albanian (HSh) trains does not require any seat reservation (= tickets are alaways available)
