Train travel in Bosnia and Herzegovina: train types, tickets, fares, discounts & other useful info

National Train Service:

Train types in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Regional (lokalni), Express (brzi) & Business (poslovni) trains

  • Regional  – local train service all over BiH, no seat reservation required. Lokalni trains have 4 digit number (starting with 2*** for ZFBH & 6*** for ZRS)
  • zfbh_carriage_train
  • Express   – long-distance domestic & international service (connecting BiH with Budapest, Beograd Zagreb & Ploce). Brzi trains have 3-digit number (starting with 2**; 3**, 4** or 5**), special tariff supplement (1,1 BAM) applies for domestic journeys, no seat reservation required
  • Business – new modern EMU trains which operate between Banja Luka & Sarajevo, special tariff supplement (5 BAM) applies, seat reservation (3 BAM) compulsory

Validity of Trains Tickets in BiH: one way tickets <100km are valid for 1 days, between 101 & 400 km - 2 days, >401km - 4 days. Return tickets are valid for 1 days for trips <50km, 2 days - for journeys between 51 & 100km and 6 days for journeys >101km

Discounts, special offers & ways to save money for passengers traveling in Bosnia and Herzegovina (ZFBH/ZRS):

  1. Passengers purchasing return tickets within ZRS, within ZFBH or between ZRS & ZFBH receive 20% discount
  2. ZFBH & ZRS give 30% ticket discount for students with holding ISIC/ITIC cards
  3. Passengers planning to visit more than one destination in BiH (for instance during a day trip) can take advantage of the fact that ZFBH & ZRS allow one stopover (with ZFBH only for tickets >100km) for any domestic journey done with one way ticket or two stopovers with any return ticket (one stopover during outward & one during return trip). What that means is that passenger having ticket from destination A to destination B can travel from A to C with stopover in destination B, thus instead of two separate tickets purchase one through ticket and as result save some money. Such trick works perfectly for instance for somebody planning to visit Doboj & Banja Luka while starting in Sarajevo
